Is all that makes a set of Dark Ages miniatures to be Carolingians that one type of helmet (that sort of proto-morion, called a war hat)? |

I assume you are looking for 9th Century Franks who do not look like they sailed in on the 1588 Armada. Gripping Beast do a great range of Dark Ages figs in 28mm. Have a look at their unarmoured Normans, for instance. They may serve purpose. 'Proto-morion' is not my favourite either, but I am sure historically accurate. Various Byzantine ranges could also fill in. If you just thought 'Merovingian' instead of 'Carolingian' – either side of 751 AD – you could justify diminishing the 'war-hats' maybe. |
