Here is the first part of the mortar team moving the mortar to a new emplacement. The figure is humping the base plate and tube of the mortar.

Nice work, and a nice figure. He looks tired. I really pity the poor sods that used to have to hump heavy stuff like that, and that still do. No doubt, the ammo carriers will be heavily burdened too. This is where you need those vewy, vewy quiet, electric mules to do stuff like this, especially when close to, or in contact with the enemy. [yes, I meant to spell it as vewy, vewy quiet, and imagine a few dinosaurs from my era will get the reference] |

But did you catch the wabbit? And when does the Elmer hunting season open? An earlier discussion had very differing views about how common 60mm mortars were. I've read in different paces that 2 rifle squads and a 60mm mortar squad was common for marines and not unknown for army platoons…other places I've read that 60mm mortars were virtually unknown in US units, but common for ARVN. Sooooo….. that's all been clear as fog….. As ever, I'd welcome your thoughts gentlemen! |

The Marines have been using them in their TO&E since WWII. The Marine 60mm and 81mm mortars used in VN were almost exact copies of the WWII ones as much of the other Marine gear was. Wolfhag |

Should we think in terms of a mortar squad or a 2/3 man team as part of the platoon? I'm a bit wary of wargame army lists – and of course virtually no practice is universal in any army; just trying to get an idea of commonplace utility and how to represent it for the tabletop. A contemporary battlefield documentary (Hill 943)describes a company of 114 in 4 platoons/16 squads….naturally units are never up to strength, so should we think of 4 platoon each with 3 rifle squads and mortar/MG squad? |
