I couldn't figure out why a Napoleonic movie is to be called 'Kitbag', as I thought that was a much more modern term. The film's publicity says the title comes from the saying "There is a general's staff hidden in every soldier's kitbag." I always thought the saying was: "Tout soldat français porte dans sa giberne le bâton de maréchal de France — Every French soldier carries a field-marshal's baton in his knapsack." |

giberne means cartridge pouch But by the way, who said this ? The earliest reference I could find is in a letter from 1823, there this phrase is assigned to the French king, then Louis XVIII: link |

I too thought the choice of title was odd – hopefully they will change it before release. |

I had another look on it, is seems Louis XVIII said this in the beginning of August 1819 in Saint-Cloud. After watching some evolutions by the pupils of the École spéciale de Saint-Cyr, he ended a speech to them with the words: Chacun de vous a dans sa giberne le bâton du maréchal Oudinot ; c'est à vous de l'en faire sortir ! (Each of you has got in his cartridge pouch the baton of Marshal Oudinot; it is up to you to get it out !) Oudinot was the French Minster of Defense at that time, and thus the highest superior of the École royale spéciale militaire. link Another version, from the Journal de Grenoble of 14 August 1819, page 3. The drill demonstration by 140 pupiles of the école took place after a mass in the chapel of Saint-Cloud. (My children, I am happy, I am very content with you; remember well that there is not one of you who had not got in his cartridge pouch the baton of the Marshal Duke of Reggio; it is up to you to get it out ! link |

"why a Napoleonic movie is to be called 'Kitbag'" Probably a temporary name while they decide on another title… |

Happy to watch a Ridley Scott movie--sometimes. I wouldn't participate in a Ridley Scott movie if they made me Blucher himself. Some of you should read about the making of Blade Runner. After a few days, the crew were wearing t-shirts reading "Will Rogers never met Ridley Scott." |

Well, they need to film in real snow to make Napoleon's retreat from Russia more authentic… ;-) But what the movie will really need is the Time Bandits as his generals… ;-) |

One description of the proposed film states - 'The intention of the film is to capture Napoleon's famous battles, relentless ambition and astounding strategic mind as an extraordinary military leader and war visionary.' battles- can we hope this suggests more than one? Looking forward to it. |
