Looks like the fishing wars are on once again, in the post-Brexit era, between Britain and France: link The French seized a UK fishing boat, and they are complaining about the lack of access to fishing grounds in UK waters. |

Don't be such a drama queen. It's being dealt with through diplomatic channels. No-one is shooting. |

The French seized a UK fishing boat, and they are complaining about the lack of access to fishing grounds in UK waters. If the 40 (yes, only 40) French boats had provided the required evidence of their previous activities in UK waters there would not have been a problem. |

The French boats that cannot provide proof of previously fishing in UK waters did not have their GPS positioning on as they were fishing illegally in UK waters. Interestingly, they also cannot provide details of where they sold their catch, it's is presumed because they did so for cash to avoid tax. The French government are using this as a very visible hard line stand against the British because they are worried about the French far right picking up votes in their coming election. All in all, it's a very French approach to stir up trouble with the traditional enemy in order to "out-fascist" the fascists. |

In an older era I recall a series on the Cod Wars – was that in Military Modelling? – which included rules for trawler v coast guard vessels that would probably stand up to a "what if" UK/France Cod war. |

Part of the problem revolves around fishing permits in Channel Island waters. These are issued by the Channel Islands (Jersey & Guernsey) and not by the UK government. The Channel Island are asking for proof that the French trawlers have fished in their waters in the past … and not all the French trawlers have provided the proof. The reasons why might be to do with fishing illegally before (and catching more fish than the quotas allow) and selling their catch where the French tax authorities have no remit. Those French trawlers that have provided the proof have been issued with licences. The French government wants London to ‘lean' on the Channel Islands to make them issue more licences, but the legal situation is that the Channel Islands – which never formed part of the EU when the UK was a member – are independent in this respect, and the UK government can ask but cannot compel. The Channel Islands – along with the Isle of Man – are Crown Dependencies. They owe allegiance to the Crown (the Queen is Duke of Normandy in the Channel Islands) and are ruled by their own governments (called The States) and the Queen is represented by the Bailiff. Most people in the UK have no idea about the relationship between the Islands and the rest of the UK … so it's no surprise that the French don't! |

Besides, the European authorities see Boris reneging on the first agreement, so they haven't done anything to help out the UK. The Dutch deciding that Britons carrying sandwiches and fruit were importing food into the EU was hilarious. As much as anything, this is intended to cause headaches for Boris & the Brexiteers (cool name for a band!) while they're trying to deal with a million and one other crises. |

The Dutch deciding that Britons carrying sandwiches and fruit were importing food into the EU was hilarious. Lots of countries don't allow this….for example USA, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan,….. The difference was that when the UK was in the EU then there were no internal trade borders (so one could carry sandwiches from England to Holland). As a nation now outside the EU the UK gets treated the same way as any other external nation. Which is obvious really. |

In an older era I recall a series on the Cod Wars – was that in Military Modelling? – which included rules for trawler v coast guard vessels that would probably stand up to a "what if" UK/France Cod war. 20th Maine: I know that David Manley has a Cod Wars ruleset on the Wargames Vault and there are 3D printed ships on Shapeways available. Hope this helps. |

Thanks – I'll check them out. I now think the rules were in Military Modelling and were by A. Ambrose who also wrote several series on Modern Naval wargaming in Model Soldier Magazine – around 1978. Now all I have to do is find them (they are somewhere in the Magazine storage!). |

Thanks! Do you think I should get into Modern Naval Wargaming? My most modern vessels presently are ACW Ironclads but I'm always open to temptation….. |

Did I mention shooting? There is a chicken shortage, as we've clearly seen by the spike in prices over that. It would, could be fun though, to posit a shooting war breaking out over this, just for grins. Who wins the naval war if that happens, since I'm not up to snuff on relative force levels for both sides. Brits have those two, shiny new carriers, while the French have one(?), but with those lovely Rafales. |
20thmaine | 09 Nov 2021 10:30 a.m. PST |
Britain's carrier is still off on an extended cruise and it took most of the navy with it so now would be the perfect time for France to invade…. |
