So when you're painting using the 3 foot rule do you paint the piping eg on Union artillerymen? I just finished a battery of Union gunners but didn't do the piping and am now wondering whether I have become a "slacker"? Be gentle… |

I just painted a bunch of 28mm Mexican American war figures for both side. I painted the piping. Just paint the piping. You won't regret and people will look and say "ooooh, you painted the piping. Very nice." Or they'll say, "Well, the piping must have been a challenge." And you can just smile your knowing smile and say, "No big deal." Trust me, it's worth it.

My ACW chaps are 6mm. So no, I don't paint the piping. |

I did paint the piping on Zouave jackets on 3mm but not in other places. They are the only ACW I have ever painted. |

Never did it in 15mm but always do it in 28mm for Artillerymen, the Cavalry I have in Shell jackets and Zouaves. I've found the method of not worrying about getting it right first time but just close enough, then cutting back with the jacket color works the best for me. |

Im doing Napoleonics not ACW, but what Ive found helps is to paint the whole collar the piping colour eg white, then paint the collar colour eg red as a stripe in the middle. You can do the same with cuffs. For ACW Im guessing you could paint piping as a too-wide stripe on a jacket, then close up on it with the jacket colour, if that makes sense. I think Id notice if it wasnt there at all. |

For 6mm I have done as forrester suggests re. painting the piping color first, and then filling in the color. For ACW, I'd be tempted to skip it. For 15mm I believe I was satisfied with some impressionistic lining, but it has been many years since I painted any. For larger figures I paint the piping. |

I paint every detail I can in 15mm. |

Ok thanks. I think that I'll give it a go especially since they are 28mm. |

One technique which I found worked well for my 28mm ACW is to use a white pen (fine or ultra-fine tipped pen w/white paint, obtainable at a craft store) to do the piping on dark colored uniform; then when it is dry, paint over the white with red (artillery) or yellow with the finest brush I have. I normally have to paint red and yellow over a white base coat to get good coverage anyway, and by using the white pen as the base coat I hardly had to do any blue touch-up. |

So I tried painting the piping on one gun section and it looks so much better than it did before. Once again thanks for your help. |
