Ultrashort pulse lasers, which fire a trillion watts for one-quadrillionth of a second, are a technology too early for military use today. But that won't always be the case, says Joe Shepherd of Booz Allen Hamilton. Breaking Defense: link |

China will steal it first or we will let them have it for free. |

A "Free Trade" agreement for above tech in exchange for "election" donations to be made via third parties to select "leaders". Isn't that how the Chinese got our missile tech in '96? link That would never happen now, right? |

The national laboratory I worked at prior to retirement had one of these 20 years ago. It was a 1 joule pulsed laser where the pulse lasted for 100 femto-seconds (100 quadrillionth of a second). The power output for that pulse was a terawatt. So these have been around for awhile. This "tabletop terawatt laser" was being used as a beta radiation source. The laser pulse entered a plasma filled chamber and the resultant excitation resulted in a burst of beta radiation. It would break any optics that weren't kept absolutely clean due to the heat created if a pulse was partially blocked by a speck of dirt. |
