Looking at your finished armies, what is the ratio of plastic figures to metal figures?

100% metal?
10% plastic/90% metal?
20% plastic/80% metal?
etc.

machinehead Supporting Member of TMP16 Oct 2021 6:12 p.m. PST

Around 90% plastic 10% metal.

myxemail16 Oct 2021 6:13 p.m. PST

Finished? 100% metal. However; looking at my future projects, some of which are in the primer stage, are about 80% plastic.
Times are changing

At a guess,
90% plastic in 54mm
40% plastic in 28mm
100% metal in 10mm
100% metal in 5/6mm

torokchar Supporting Member of TMP16 Oct 2021 7:29 p.m. PST

Still prefer metal, but my total collection all periods and scales are probably 50/50.

FusilierDan Supporting Member of TMP16 Oct 2021 7:40 p.m. PST

finished armies?
28 periods
1-100% plastic 28mm HYW
1-30% metal 70% plastic 28mm ACW
1-80% metal 20% plastic 28mm Vikings
2-50% metal 50% plastic 28mm LotR and Frostgrave
23-100% metal 15mm,28mm,40mm to lazy to type out.

John the OFM16 Oct 2021 7:53 p.m. PST

5% plastic.for WWII.
AWI 100% metal.

Glengarry516 Oct 2021 9:09 p.m. PST

15mm 100% metal
As for 28mm, well, it varies. For example, best guesses:
Darkest Africa 95% metal, 5% plastic conversions
Northern Crusades 85% plastic, 15% resin, one metal figure
Boshin War 99% metal, 1% plastic
Fenian Raids 45% plastic 55% metal
French & Indian War, 100% metal… old school RAFM figures…

100% metal (mostly 15mm); except 100% plastic for 54mm

About 50/50 at the moment.

Once I start gaming, it'll move towards 100% plastic for the tabletop with metal for my own painted collection.

Aviator17 Oct 2021 3:00 a.m. PST

100% metal for figures
75% plastic for 1/1200 scale naval with rest made up of metal or balsa scratchbuild

advocate17 Oct 2021 3:57 a.m. PST

Maybe 50/50. Maybe.

45thdiv17 Oct 2021 4:02 a.m. PST

AWI – 100% metal
ACW – 100% metal.
WW2 – 100% metal.
Sudan – 60% metal, 40% plastic
Napoleonic – 70% metal, 30% plastic.

Dagwood17 Oct 2021 4:11 a.m. PST

25/28mm Ancients – 100% metal but with 10% plastic waiting in the wings.
20mm WW2 – 90% plastic
28mm Colonial – 100% plastic
15mm Colonial – 100% metal
GW LOTR – maybe 80% plastic ?

14Bore17 Oct 2021 4:22 a.m. PST

15 – 18mm Napoleonic 5244 – 1 metal over plastic

If could find plastic in that scale it could change

The Last Conformist17 Oct 2021 5:54 a.m. PST

When is an army really finished? There's always another something more to add …

But looking at finished figures, without worrying whether they are part of finished armies (or armies at all, which many of my skirmish figures surely aren't), it's 90%+ metal.

The 28mm stuff is perhaps two thirds plastic, but the more numerous 15mm figures are all metal.

Guessing 80% plastic and 20% metal. If we remove pre-painted figures ('Clix, SW, LOTR, D&D, etc.), it's probably more like 60% plastic, 40% metal.

And, let's not forget 0.001% fondant, chocolate, gingerbread, etc. For some reason the number of such figures does not grow over time …

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP17 Oct 2021 9:39 a.m. PST

Depends on the army

For 6mm 100% metal – same for 15mm

For 28mm probably 20% plastic 80% metal; there are just not many plastic options for 28mm SYW!

Oberlindes Sol LIC Supporting Member of TMP17 Oct 2021 10:16 a.m. PST

Just looking at numbers of personnel, I think it's about 80% metal to 20% plastic.

Vehicles may have the reverse percentages.

Phillius Sponsoring Member of TMP17 Oct 2021 11:47 a.m. PST

Probably 2% plastic, the rest metal. No more plastic to be added, too fragile for aging eyes and bumbling fingers.

Just looking at numbers of personnel,

Which weights more … a pound of lead or a pound of plastic?

Personal logo PaulCollins Supporting Member of TMP17 Oct 2021 4:30 p.m. PST

About 75% plastic, 25% metal.

kcabai18 Oct 2021 6:56 a.m. PST

28mm LOTR:
50% Plastic (GW)
50% Metal (Minifigs, GW, Mithril, Heritage)
>.1% 3D

15mm WWII
33% Plastic (BF, Zvezda, PSC, Dockyard, Minirons)
33% Resin (and metal) FIB, BF
33% Metal (OG, QRF, BF, Peter Pig)
>.1% 3D

6mm WWII/Modern
100% Metal (GHQ, CnC, Skytex, HR)

Personal logo ColCampbell Supporting Member of TMP18 Oct 2021 8:36 a.m. PST

99%+ metal. I only have a couple of plastic WW2 Germans and one mounted Napoleonic British Highland officer (vintage Airfix).

Jim

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP18 Oct 2021 1:57 p.m. PST

95% plastic.

Personal logo Old Contemptible Supporting Member of TMP19 Oct 2021 1:07 p.m. PST

85% metal. If you subtract my 28mm WWII collection, then it would be 98% metal.

Martin Rapier19 Oct 2021 11:54 p.m. PST

2mm, all metal
6mm, all metal.
15mm, prob 40% plastic, 60% metal plus a bit of resin.
20mm, mostly plastic, some metal, some resin.
54mm. Plastic all the way.
