Does anyone know of a good source of information for the organisation of a Heer Panzergrenadier company and platoon in mid-1944? I am looking for one which will detail the individual soldiers and the vehicles they rode in whether armoured in halftracks or motorised on trucks. In other words, gaming at 1:1 scale.

Any pointers?

This 'snapshot' seems to link to the old PzGren pages.

If you're just looking for the Rifle Company types, late war, then you can probably find what you need from wwiidaybyday, if you can speak a little German. If not then I think Leo Niehorster has a few of the late war orgs in English.

I can't recall seeing a suggested allocation of vehicle seating for personnel for the late war units, for the Platoons it is fairly easy to surmise though.

Sadly the site refuses to connect.

Switch your router off and on again and retry the connection.

Failing that try a different browser.

Jim, will do.

Starfury, what brilliant sources. Fortunately my German is 'an der Aufgabe angemessen' so I can use both. Thanks.

Usually, even in the better equipped units, only one of the two battalions would have halftracks. The other trucks.

In some, both would be truck-born, if they were lucky.

I recall reading some accounts for Normandy, where they were riding into a night attack on the back of Panthers, until they got close to the village/town, where they then dismounted to suppoert the attack.

We've all seen the photos of the paratroopers riding on the back of King Tigers during the Battle of the Bulge, and I've seen lots of other photos of German troops riding on StuGs too. The latter frequently were assigned to support the infantry.

Only the Panzer Lehr Division seems to have been fully equipped with half tracks. Even SS formations were only partly armoured. The sources suggested also seem to point out which trucks the motorised Panzergrenadiers rode in, which is very useful.

Yes, only Pz Lehr had all halftracks, as noted above, the rest only had one or two battalions at most.

And Pz Lehr only had that many HTs for a while.

You're welcome, I've had that site bookmarked for probably 10 years and this is the 1st time I've used it for anything. :)
