Technologies could render the ocean transparent by the time Australia's new submarines are ready, some experts say Guardian: link |

According to some folks, subs are pretty noticeable now, of not 'visible'. |

I find that hard to believe, as well as the claim that China can currently detect subs at depths of up to 500m with lasers. Aircraft can be detected in the air visually and by radar, and yet they still venture into harms way. If enemy sensor drones are deployed, I imagine future attack subs and others may also become drone carriers too, which can deploy them to seek out and destroy the enemy's drones and sensors, and to deploy their own on-board weaponry, or self-destruct as needed, depending upon the value of the target(s) opposing them. "any Australian submarine that attempts to do something in these waters, such as launch a tomahawk missile, will reveal its position and shortly thereafter be destroyed". This IS true now, and was true 40 – 65+ years ago. Firing any missile or rocket out of the sea gives away the position of the firer automatically, if there are any sensors within range of the launch point. There is nothing new, or suprising about that point. In other news, the sky is blue, and water is still wet. |

However is the Detection, Decision, Action Loop short enough and is the range short enough to have a reasonable rate of success? |
chironex | 05 Oct 2021 5:33 p.m. PST |
Well, 1. The Chinese do know that submarines move, yes? 2. We don't HAVE Tomahawk missiles. |

Australia is buying Tomahawk missiles- link |

Since China is building new submarines, these "experts" should go tell them to stop because submarines are obsolete. |
Wargamer Blue | 06 Oct 2021 1:24 a.m. PST |
China is a generation behind in ASW. It's their naval weakness. |
chironex | 06 Oct 2021 3:02 a.m. PST |
Tgerritsen: I shall believe that when I see it. I have yet to spot an F-35 around these parts either. |
gregmita2 | 06 Oct 2021 10:28 a.m. PST |
Yup. Now I wonder why a lefty newspaper quotes "experts" who advise that submarines are useless… China is a generation behind in ASW. It's their naval weakness. |

If – somehow – subs are visible, surface ships will be even more so. A sub will always be harder to find than a surface vessel. |

The basic problem with the argument that submarines are obsolete is the same one that happened during WWII (active sonar was detected long before it could detect). The ships that are trying to detect the subs are also giving away there positions. so if the new submarines release anti aircraft packages or anti ship packages the hunters may become the hunted. |
