Hi everyone. Looking for some guidance on tuft sizes for 15/18mm ACW and WWII figure bases. For those of you who use premade tufts from the various manufacturers out there, what size (in millimeters) do you typically adhere to your bases? Better said, what is the largest size you would use? |

I usually use the 4mm or 6mm tufts. Occasionally the larger ones for some variety. Army Painter tufts have a nice mix of different sizes. |

I like the Silflorettes 2/4mm tufts from Scenic Express. They are a goos size for most 15mm or smaller. I could see an occasional 6mm tuft but they are for large bushes. |

Master Caster – tufts are pre-made clumps of grass like the Silflorettes that Stosstruppen mentions. There are many manufacturers our there that make these which, in my opinion, add some life to bases beyond static grass. Thanks pzivh43 and Stosstruppen. I think the range of 2-4-6mm is probably spot on. |

I use 6mm as most tufts will drape. Leadbear's Tufts (Australia) are self-adhesive, a major plus. Noch, Heki (Model train suppliers) are also excellent. I have used their wheat fields for my 15mm. link |

I like to use these, that I got from Litko (in response to Master Caster's inquiry):
I believe that a lot of scenery is "Size Neutral", up to a point. Like a two inch tree is usually good for 10-20 mm figures. And how big is a rock? I also kind of prefer more dramatic effects. If your scene or effect is subtle, it's not noticed. When I do highlights, I try to use as much contrast as possible. The same with scenery. I try to use the biggest tuft possible that still looks plausible. If smaller tufts are used, I would use many. |

The tufts add a great deal to the look of the bases. And there are so many different shades, textures, and lengths. The cost is reasonable and they are easy to use. |

I started to use tuffs on command stands for my 15mm units. It would be too much trouble to go back and add tuffs to already grassed stands. |

I use MiniNatur 2mm tufts. I glue figures to the base, add normal railroad flock, and then add a few random tufts. I vary the color. I use dark green, light green, and brown. I want the look of clumps of taller grass, but not overgrown too tall. I can get them at my local hobby shop, but I'm sure there are US online sellers.

I use the 2-4 mm tufts on my 15mm ACW. |

I use 2-6 mm, those lowland shrubs are some of my favorite |

ccmaty, Thanks. Who knew? A whole new industry to peruse. I've always been unafraid of revealing my ignorance on things, but admittedly I must really get out of the workshop more. Toby Barrett |

i am a little late to the party. As a rule I want base vegetation for wargame figures to be knee height or less. I do not know what that would be for 15/18mm. The odd bit of taller vegetation is OK. |

6mm tufts are going to be well more than knee-high for 15/18mm figures, but the overall look might be pretty good if the figures are raised a couple mm's by the cast-on little baselets (is there a proper term for the things?) while the tufts are planted on the plastic/card/mdf base. |

I suppose it depends on how tall the grass you are representing is … |

You can get the mininatur silflorettes from Scenic Express. Search for Buffalo Grass. |

Tufts are wonderful creations… but would suggest very small and sparse. Will miss quote a comment read somewhere: 'Tiger advancing down street… in it's own Garden' ! |
