If you've been continuously perplexed by the mish-mash of Armies, commanders, generals and campaigns of a similar name etc. this definitve page may help unravel some of it.

I'd add a personal opinion that the latter period from '96-'00 we should really be calling 'Republican' as the zeal amd effect of the revolutionary part had really subsided with the establishment of more stable, centreist policymakers.

It's a good synthetic article SHaT1984, thanks for that. My opinion leans me to 1794 with the 1st amalgame's new effects as seen at Fleurus and the lesser known Mont Saint Jean battle (overshadowed by the "other" Mont Saint Jean 21 years later).

:-) I'm sure you may mean 'synthesis' eh?
Or just a good old fashioned summary?

Yes I was suprised by the location too!
Eerily auspicious when you think about it?

There is also a listing, by year of existence, of the French armies in Les Armies Francaises a l'Epoque Revolutionnaire 1789-1804 by Georges Le Diberder on pages 118-119.

It also lists their commanders.

The numbers of armies in existence, by year, are as follows:

1792: 8
1793: 16
1794-1795: 23
1796: 8
1797-1798: 20
1799: 12
1800: 12
1801-1802: 7
1802: 4
