Great scenario ideas. Wide variety of troops and equipment, including German & British spies. Japanese midget subs and a what if SNLF deployment, you'd have the making for all kinds of crazy events. Adding crocodiles to the mix is a loaded cigar for all sides.

Japanese forces and Madagascar?

Hmmm, that is new to me.

I suspect you could even add in modern day pirates, since supposedly a number of their ancestors retired there back in the day.

no, not Japanese, that was the threat which prompted the invasion, at least to remove the threat of the harbour falling to the Japanese if they invaded…..enemy forces were Vichy French, Foreign Legion….

yea, some really super ideas there for scenarios.

Yea, except for the torpedoes and ALL those vessels sunk.

Sadly, the article is a bit light on that. 34 ships seems impossible for me to believe was done by mini-subs, which are typically one or two-shot vehicles at best.

Did the Japanese really have that many in the islands there, and if so, how did they get there, since IIRC they mentioned larger mother subs were NOT used to carry the mini-subs there.

Several Japanese subs? German subs?

French subs, or limpet mines?

Inquiring minds want answers.

Seems like a great scenario for conversion to the Traveller Sci-Fi era, given the weird mix of forces involved, distances from additional support, large forces but little fighting in many cases when outnumbered, but strong resistance and delaying actions in otheres.

Pretty sure Japanese subs did operate that far west – out of Port Blair in the Andaman Islands IIRC.

The PC game Carriers at War had this scenario, in which a couple of Japanese carriers intervene.

The French surrender of Indochina to the Japanese loomed in the minds of strategists. While reaching Madagascar would be more than a stretch, it was possible that the pro-Vichy government would simply roll over.
