Sigh, if I was young again, I so would sign up for that branch instead. [Although the USAF did treat me well for 12 years.]

I actually prefer that enlisted rank to the USAF's weird wavy-line chevrons. But I'm Army, so that's to be expected.

I think we've talked about this before. The Air Force was there first with the delta insignia, and NASA (and later Star Trek) was inspired by that.
Uniforms with wraparound jackets also have quite a long history, especially with honour guards, which was where valets, doormen, etc. got their inspiration.

Doesn't matter what uniforms came before. They're clearly mimicking late 20th-21st century SF media, because fans of that media will definitely include the demographic they need— nerds.
Space Force isn't about drawing weapons or kicking down doors. It's about orbital mechanics, satellite trajectories, sub-orbital ballistics, and quite literally rocket science. They need imaginative thinkers and the analytically minded— and if letting them think they're dressed like Captain Kirk will help bring ‘em in, then they'll dress ‘em like Captain Kirk.
What, you don't think the uniforms draw in recruits to the US Navy and the Marine Corps? Sure as shootin', they do.

There is no question that warfare will very soon extend into space, and the US had damn well be ready to fight it and win it when it does. The other forces as they stand are concerned about space, but only as secondary support for their primary interests, which are land, sea, or air. A dedicated force whose emphasis is specifically space is an absolute necessity; it can not be allocated to second hand status, because doing so is How You Lose a War. If military history hasn't taught us all that, what the heck are we learning from our gaming? The greatest advantage in any battle is to hold the high ground. There is no higher ground than space.

So while I am mildly amused by the insignia and uniforms' similarities to well-known SF media imagery and costumes, I actually think it's a brilliant approach, for a division of the military which needs to have the top minds in its area of operation. And I think that's a good thing for the other divisions as well— let the Navy be the Navy, let the Army be the Army, let the Air Force be the Air Force, the Marines be the Marines and the Coast Guard be the Coast Guard, each concentrating on their specific areas of concern as they should, yet also working in concert and mutual support. And the Space Force should be a welcome addition to that grouping, for all involved.

Totally agree on the importance of a sharp uniform and the importance of the Space Force itself. Although I'm guessing the similarity to sci-fi franchises is mostly coincidental, or roundabout (the Star Trek dress uniform was probably influenced by historical uniforms, just like this Space Force design). If it helps, it helps though.

First of all, I would hope military officers, no matter the branch, should already be imaginative and analytical thinkers. Those are important no matter the area of operations. That's an issue with the general culture of the military, as opposed to a specific branch.
Secondly, I actually think most sci-fi nerds are a terrible fit for "understanding orbital mechanics, etc." There is far too much naval fiction in space sci-fi, and too little real science. People used to those paradigms will need to unlearn all that to deal with real operations in space. You may be better off starting from scratch than with those preconceived notions. There is a subset of nerds who can fit in well of course, the "hard sci-fi" types, but they tend to already be engineers or some similar related profession.
