It's so simple, does the venue require mask no. Does Montgomery County require mask at the venue no. Just keep everyone advised that a change in the mandate could occur at anytime and be ready for it. I personally can care less who wears a mask or who request one to be worn at a game they are running. But to make a decision like this knowing it would be controversial based on personal feelings is just plain and simply wrong. Personal feelings need to be put aside and let the people who are on top of this,Montgomery County make the decisions.

John the OFM21 Sep 2021 6:08 p.m. PST

If you don't care who wears a mask, then why did you bring it up?

Rustycop Retired 201921 Sep 2021 6:17 p.m. PST

Hey John I know you're not from Ireland. My name is ED MILLER and if you want to discuss my post in person anywhere anytime please let me know. I can drive comfortably 2hours to meet up.

Stryderg21 Sep 2021 6:24 p.m. PST

Personal feelings need to be put aside and let the people who are on top of this,Montgomery County make the decisions.

And I wholeheartedly disagree. I don't trust the "people on top" to have my best interests at heart. "I" have my best interests at heart, thank you very much.

Rustycop Retired 201921 Sep 2021 6:24 p.m. PST

Wait I'll save myself the trip. READ the post you seem somewhat intelligent I said I don't care who wears one but I also don't care if others don't wear one based on the lack of a mandate by the venue or Montgomery County. I hope this makes everything crystal clear for you.

Rustycop Retired 201921 Sep 2021 6:31 p.m. PST

Stryderg, you trust the HMGS BOD to make these decisions before more qualified experts. Just asking. As far as you having your best interest at heart ok but like it or not the venue and Montgomery County have the last say. This can of worms should have never been opened.

TSD10121 Sep 2021 6:36 p.m. PST

HEY, HEY, HEY!

I live in Baltimore, and boy am I glad we averted that misadventure.

Now that's funny

TSD10121 Sep 2021 7:14 p.m. PST

masks are required in order to enter the facility………….

Thats the problem Double G, they won't be required to enter the facility. Only the Gamerooms, flea market, and dealer hall. HMGS does not control the entrances, hallways, restaurants, bathrooms, casino areas, etc. so while HMGS is forcing attendees to wear a mask they can watch as the unmasked patrons to the other businesses walk back and forth among them.

Personal logo Parzival Supporting Member of TMP21 Sep 2021 7:21 p.m. PST

Hey, just copy the Emmys. They obviously know the right thing to do!

Rustycop Retired 201921 Sep 2021 7:23 p.m. PST

I think everyone is missing the point. Do you really think the venue and the county are not going to do what's in the best interest of their customers and constituents? All they, HMGS had to do is to inform the membership of the possibility of a mask mandate and be prepared. They are not the experts and should not put themselves in a position to appear as such.

Double G21 Sep 2021 7:28 p.m. PST

"Thats the problem Double G, they won't be required to enter the facility."

Fixed it for you……..

How far can you drive uncomfortably?

Stryderg21 Sep 2021 7:38 p.m. PST

Stryderg, you trust the HMGS BOD to make these decisions before more qualified experts.

Nope, that's you either putting words in my mouth, or setting up a straw man argument.
the venue and Montgomery County have the last say

I believe I have a say as well. And that will probably determine my actions more than anything the venue or MC decide.

Rustycop Retired 201921 Sep 2021 7:43 p.m. PST

Ok Stryderg. If you read my original post I'm only pointing out the BOD should have never made this decision in the first place. What everyone does from this point on is a personal choice. Not looking for an argument at all.

Rustycop Retired 201921 Sep 2021 7:44 p.m. PST

Double G 6 hours.

KSmyth21 Sep 2021 8:44 p.m. PST

I live on the other side of the country and won't be attending. Probably a little far to drive too.

My guess is the BOD is offering certainty. The infection rates in Montgomery County are pretty significant, like most parts of the country. You can see them here:

link

By making an early announcement the convention can begin to see what shakes out in the way of reduced registrations, canceled registrations, canceled events, and begin to plan accordingly. Maybe there are some cost savings they can take to prepare. Fewer table rentals etc.

On the other hand there may be potential attendees who are reassured the convention is requiring masking on the floor, and will choose to attend. The convention is walking a very thin line between these two disparate groups.

Attendees can wish away the rock and a hard place these organizers find themselves in. They are obligated to host an event at great fiscal risk while they dance a tightrope to keep their attendees safe while not pissing off the anti-vax/anit-mask adherents and those who shrug their shoulders. Meanwhile between now and November 10th the rules can change entirely. It's a moving target.

Rustycop Retired 201921 Sep 2021 8:59 p.m. PST

Rustycop Retired 201922 Sep 2021 2:25 a.m. PST

Yes they were given 50 days……..

Rustycop Retired 201922 Sep 2021 2:52 a.m. PST

Oh Cardinal just thought of this who's going to enforce this mandate? Do they plan on hiring "Mask Monitors" and at what additional expense?

Mr Elmo22 Sep 2021 3:52 a.m. PST

You know what: I'm not going…problem solved.

With Gen Con just ending and requiring masks and uncertainties about Adepticon, I think it's best to vote with my wallet and avoid diminished experiences.

Sam Quee22 Sep 2021 4:46 a.m. PST

I think its easy. Its just another game. Play by the rules or don't play.
If the rules of the game have to be "enforced" I'd rather not have you in my game.

Dadster Supporting Member of TMP22 Sep 2021 5:22 a.m. PST

Sam Quee well said! Couldn't agree more. It is what it is.

To the OP:

Not making a decision like this is also making a decision. If you say "no masks" then a lot of people who would feel safer if it was a masked convention won't come. Either way you're going to lose people.

Going with masks – is a hope that fewer people will catch covid. Simple as that.

It is good to be King Supporting Member of TMP22 Sep 2021 8:08 a.m. PST

It's simple.
If you do not want to wear a mask.
You have the "Freedom" to not attend!

HansPeterB22 Sep 2021 8:18 a.m. PST

20thmaine +1. I'm sitting at home nursing a COVID breakthrough, and man is it miserable. I guess this is a "mild" infection, but I've got fever, chills, nausea, muscle ache, awful cough -- the whole nine yards. I also have to isolate for 10-14 days, which is a lot of time to be missing work. I would not risk this again just for convention unless masks were required all around.

Thresher0122 Sep 2021 8:32 a.m. PST

Parzival and Mr. Elmo for the win.

I won't be attending any that require masks either, since as our "leaders" have shown, they are unnecessary in many/most cases, and cheap 50 cent masks provide little to no REAL protection.

Stryderg22 Sep 2021 9:40 a.m. PST

I would not risk this again just for convention unless masks were required all around.

The problem is that masks do not offer as much protection as you would think. So all you accomplish is providing a false sense of security and some mild protection from law suits.

Rustycop Retired 201922 Sep 2021 10:08 a.m. PST

Geese Sam I was really looking forward to rolling your Covid-19 covered dice at your game and then touching all your figs and infecting them as well. But I hope you'll be providing face coverings to all your troops to prevent this from happening.

HansPeterB22 Sep 2021 10:25 a.m. PST

You are correct that masks provide little protection -- they are not really intended to -- they help prevent the spread of COVID by blocking the aerosol discharge in which the virus is packaged. They help prevent those who are asymptomatic, presymptomatic, or jerks, from spreading the disease.

David Manley22 Sep 2021 12:01 p.m. PST

It is surprising after all this time that people still don't understand how and why masks work and who they are intended to protect.

Dadster Supporting Member of TMP22 Sep 2021 12:15 p.m. PST

And they don't understand where their rights end and then they are then impinging on others rights. Of course many of them probably believe only their rights matter.

Indeed. It is like some strange alternate reality.

War Scorpio22 Sep 2021 1:30 p.m. PST

When I attend a HMGS convention, my "primary" objective is to game and socialize with fellow comrades. Usually 10 to 12 hours spread between morning, afternoon, and evening games. I try to squeeze in some flea market time (like the midnight deal)and always visit the vendors on Sunday morning.

The thought of having to wear a mask for 12 hours in a day is just repulsive. Trying to hear what someone has to say with a mask on makes it worse.

As RustyCop said, the Board should have just waited for any change in announcements. They already had orchestrated the perfect situation where diverse games were set up with published rules on mask compliance. Everyone in this state could "reasonably" be accommodated. A long overdue good time was set for all.

Now we have a situation where at least one half of the scheduled gamers will not show do to the mask restriction. Many gamemasters will bail so forget booking games on the existing PEL. Looks like HMGS just spawned their own nightmare scenario.

Dadster Supporting Member of TMP22 Sep 2021 1:39 p.m. PST

War Scorpio would like to know where you got your statistics regarding 'where at least half of the scheduled gamers will not show due to the mask restriction'. Private poll you took or just your ballpark estimate?

Dadster Supporting Member of TMP22 Sep 2021 1:43 p.m. PST

Your personal decision is yours to make – and as per HMGS – no mask and you have made your decision not to attend and with mask you have decided to attend. That's the long and short of it – as of this moment.
