Looking for a set of rules for a friend.

He has 20mm armies. Soldiers singly mounted. Looking for a skirmish game that can handle more than just 1 or 2 tanks.

Already have rejected Battlegroup, Crossfire and Nuts.

Suggestions?

Stryderg20 Sep 2021 2:23 p.m. PST

Nuts!
aww, nuts, already rejected.

If you are looking for largish armies, then you might go for something lighter, Fubar, FAD and Nordic Weasel Squad Hammer come to mind.

Could try Rapid Fire – but typically has 3 or so tanks

I have played it with 2 tanks per side plus some squaddies – I liked it

There's a "Rapid Fire for Rookies" out there somewhere.

Isn't Rapid Fire where a stand = 1 platoon or 1 company?

Bismarck20 Sep 2021 3:36 p.m. PST

Mark,
with mods, Disposable Heroes would work as would work
as Buck Surdu's Combat Patrol. Rapid fire and its new
baby brother Rapid Fire Reloaded. The Rapid Fire sets are designed for larger units, but can be treated as a small skirmish game. Also single or mounted in 2s for infantry. 8-10 man companies. Many people call it a skirmish game treated as larger scale. Dennis has the latest Reloaded edition in print. the original Rapid Fire, 2nd edition is not in print or just available as PDF. Check out their website. Many players play it as a 1:1 skirmish. Both Disposable Heroes and Combat patrol are designed for platoon and with experienced players up
to company level. Again, both single mounted 1:1 figures and AFVs That might be a better fit.Have played both at company level, with
each player running a platoon to conclusion in 4 hours.
good luck,

Sam

Panzer Truppe. Available on Wargames Vault in a MWAN magazine:

I thought that I saw it for sale outside of the magazine somewhere. It's in it's 4th or 5th edition. Loads of fun. We usually use micro armor, but it should scale up nicely.

We play Chain of Command with multiple vehicles.

Battleground WWII is good too

I think "Fast Rules" is out in a new edition; the original was ultra- simple, so may not be of interest. It does meet the stated requirements though.

Microbiggie20 Sep 2021 7:29 p.m. PST

We've played several games of Chain of Command with multiple tanks. It's easy to have 1 player control a tank platoon.

Why was Crossfire rejected?

Men Under Fire by Frank Chadwick.

@ MajorB
The tank rules in Crossfire are just too basic.

I'll re-read chain of command and check out Men Under Fire.

There is us:-

Needs really about 3 tanks to work at best.

Infantry are typically in teams and or squads.
No points system, they don't work in the real world.

Tanks need to have rotating turrets (like you did when you were a kid).

Tractics, and Battleground.

And wondering why Battlegroup was rejected?

Tractics or Men Under Fire or Chain of Command

ciaphas21 Sep 2021 3:26 p.m. PST

Never had a problem with "Rapid Fire" as said earlier it doesn't matter what term you use to describe the unit. A squad or company, it is just 8-10 miniatures.

@PzIVH43:

Our club tried them several times, both for Normandy and N Africa. It had some ideas we liked but the command rules felt clumsy and the combat often ended up "roll a 6." I dunno, just not our bag.

my vote for I Ain't Been Shot, Mum! Easily handles from 30-100 figures plus five to ten tanks per side. plays fast. Card driven activation captures randomness of battle and the fact that no plan survives contact with the enemy

Achtung Minen01 Oct 2021 2:25 p.m. PST

I would definitely highly recommend Arc of Fire for this. "Skirmish game that can handle more than 1 or 2 tanks" is practically its tagline: it was made for exactly that reason. Arc of Fire has all the card-driven goodness of IABSM but unlike that game Arc of Fire is actually designed as a skirmish game, not a company-sized game (although a company is probably its upper limit). The Lardies game that is designed to be a skirmish system is TW&T, which is a much better ruleset than their later Chain of Command but sadly it is not supported anymore. Either way, I don't find that either CoC or TW&T handle lots of vehicles well from my experience.

Now, if you do want a great skirmish game that maybe doesn't do lots of tanks well but is nevertheless a terrific skirmish game, I'd recommend Battleground WW2 without reservations. Certainly before anything else mentioned above. Otherwise, given your requirement, I wouldn't look further than Arc of Fire.
