I am aware that the range has had a number of sculptors over the years but does anyone know how the Renaisasnce figures, Italian wars scale against other ranges such as Essex/Venexia/Donnington new range?
They look quite good on the website but there are no photos of the horses in the renaissance range. Again, anyone know about how the horses scale against Essex horses?
thanks

Battle Master:

Drop me a line at mark@scalecreep.com I sell those here in the US of A and would be happy to snap some quick pics to send you.

I don't have any other makes to compare to but will shoot them on a grid for reference.

Cheers.

I have figures from both lines. I like Essex very much although their poses are somewhat limited. They are very clean sculps with correct equipment and are easy to paint well. I also have Black Hat/Gladiator figs. These are well animated and full of character. Some, particularly the knights and the dismounted command figures are very nice. However, most of these are bigger and considerably more bulky than Essex. I have managed to mix them using certain tricks such as arranging them in a certain way or putting a washer under the smaller figure. Painting in the same style also helps to blend the various figures together. However, the bulkier Black Hat figures, such as the Swiss arquebusiers, are in reality another scale. The Black Hat Spanish halberdiers lose their halberds very quickly. But the lances on the Black Hat cavalry are very sturdy. Hope this helps.

The older Black Hat era castings were done in a cheaper metal, but towards the end of their tenure they'd moved over to pewter, which fixed a number of issues with the strength of weapons such as halberds and lances. I've continued to use lead free pewter for the range since I took it on three years ago.

The poor state of the pictures for all the Gladiator ranges is something that I am working on. The cutting edge pictures for 2002 don't hold up nowadays, and the range still suffers from the legacy of paper lists in that some codes still don't have pictures. But it's a slow job: I haven't been able to have a photography session since about April, and preparing figures so that all photographs are consistent in style is time consuming. The reason? I'm busy fulfilling orders or remaking moulds. Photography gets done in quieter periods.

If you're in the U.K. and want a sample of the range, please get in touch.
