The worst hobby injury poll that is running got me thinking… what dumb things have you done while hobbying? Here are some of mine:

A). Dipped paintbrush in coffee
B). Dropped figure into paint pot
C). Glued arms on backwards
D). Glued torso on backwards
E). Thrown away critical part of miniature while cleaning work area
F). Cut off critical part of miniature, thinking it was flash
G). Dropped, then stepped on paint bottle
H). Dropped mini, then rolled over it with chair while looking for it
I). Primed in dense fog, spent hours cleaning fuzzy gunk off figures
J). Left just-primed resin ships out to dry, forgot them and left them in the sun.
K). Accidentally ordered wrong scale
L). Accidentally ordered something I already had
M). And so on.

F, H, and N) Removed finger tips. Yes more than once, not even the same one…

My own top spot will have to go to a model-making friend in high school who forgot he had a tube of super glue in his pocket…

But as far as personal accomplishments go, it will have to be the time I had just finished meticulously rigging a 1/1200 ship model, held it up in front of my eyes, said "There! Finished!" and then promptly dropped it on the floor.

I also once squeezed a bottle of Reaper paint that had gotten clogged so hard that it exploded all over my workspace. I was still finding spots of paint in surprising places months later.

You know, I have done both of what you've mentioned as well, except that it was a 1/600 ironclad. And then there is shaking an open bottle. Still have specks on my laptop from each of those times.

Placed beer on coaster on desk.
Drank paint cleaning water on other coaster on desk.

I finished painting some beautiful figures and went to spray them with a flat clear coat and sprayed them with a white primer by accident. UGH!!!

HMS Exeter15 Sep 2021 11:15 a.m. PST

I) I shot 6 T34/85s and the primer crazed. It would not brush smooth. When I applied the basic green, the primer's texture proved porous. The paint soaked in beautifully, but it wouldn't take decals.

K), L), and

M) I set fire to my hand. Small burn on right hand. My only cool scar.

N. Stabbed myself in the leg with a wide-bladed X-Acto knife, vertically, while sitting indian-style on the floor and cutting plastic parts off the sprue.

Nice, small scar requiring only 3 stitches in trip to the emergency room.

As with Doug, spray painted some very nicely done Rebs in metallic silver instead of Dull Coat

Glued on the odd arm once or twice

Anyone painted the same unit twice? That's how I got two of the British 17th Light Dragoons

whitejamest15 Sep 2021 12:15 p.m. PST

This is basically a catalogue of anxiety dreams.

This is kid stuff. None of this compares with buying an army trusting that the manufacturer would finish the army/sell the opposition army. I've been caught that way at least three times.

C) but it wasn't backwards just out of position
E) a couple of times. Ugh

epturner15 Sep 2021 1:05 p.m. PST

A, H and J, with the caveat that I forgot they were drying and then it started to rain while I was busy working on another batch of figures.

Tried out a new glue I bought at a convention on clump foliage. It started smoking so bad and the smoke smelled so foul I had to throw the tree I was making out the window.

Carried a rubbermaid plastic box with cover into Rockcon.

Entering through the side door, the lights we were unexpectedly off and did not know there was a down step x2.

Foot missed the steps completely and I had a split second of falling to ponder the inevitable impact.

Impact popped the top off the box, box over balanced, and miniatures careened across the floor despite whatever rolling impact method I did to protect them.

The game started in less 2 hours. And I had already taken enormous casualties.

Thankfully my brother was also holding a game and he had his trusty maintenance kit with him with plenty of glue and tools.

Repairs made. Game saved. But I still cringe a bit today when traveling with miniatures.

F, H, L.

Also (O) dropped by paintbrush onto painted figures; (P) didn't seal wooden base before applying basing material, resulting in spectacular warping !

Chimpy15 Sep 2021 2:13 p.m. PST

C. Glued on one arm the wrong side so the thumb ended up pointing down while holding a sword. Looked good until I noticed.

But I also did a Thresher and stabbed myself in the leg whilst cleaning flash. Not serious enough to go to ER but did put a hole in my jeans.

I also shook a bottle of Militarum Green and splashed paint all over my T-shirt. I was worried about spilling on the new carpet but managed to hold paint in T shirt until I could tip it outside. T shirt undamaged but I did go through the horror of going to a GW shop to buy a replacement.

Made and painted minis out of wood for a pirate game, made player aides (nice chart to simplify the results of dice rolls, printed 3 pages across and 4 down, cut/taped together and pasted to cardboard on an easel so everyone could see it), made terrain, made awards for the players (ribbons for "best die roll", "drunkest pirate", "survivor" etc). Set it all up at a convention and no one played.

The dumb part was not realizing that most of the attendees would hang around and play with friends and people they knew, not the first-timer.

Bought a not-Xacto handle with a collet on each end.
You can see where this is going…

Wiped debris off my knife with my bare finger.I have a lovely scar to remind me not to do that again.

E). Thrown away critical part of miniature while cleaning work area
F). Cut off critical part of miniature, thinking it was flash
H). Dropped mini, then rolled over it with chair while looking for it
L). Accidentally ordered something I already had

Glued wrong torso to legs. Multiple times.
Does procrastinating so long you no longer want to do the project anymore count? Because it should.

if I thought long and hard maybe all the above in some form

As I applied the last section of ratlines to a beautifully painted and rigged 120gun French Napoleonic ship it slipped out of my hands landing masts first on the floor between my legs.

I went away for 20mins before inspecting the damage.

The masts were held in place by the rigging so I must have done something right. Bent and only the main mast broken at the base. So reparable but never fully straight ever again.

I wince every time I play AoS games.

Have fun.

B, F, and L.

B was into a jar of Polly S paint back when I only used acrylics once in a while.

After that I used acrylics exclusively.

Dropped my entire 15mm 1815 Prussian army on a board from shoulder height on to cement floor. Walked away and did not return until the next day. lead figures on metal bases did not help.
