May anyone suggest me cheap 6mm miniatures?

Griefbringer13 Sep 2021 1:43 p.m. PST

Do you have particular genre or period in mind?

robpask13 Sep 2021 1:52 p.m. PST

Ancient, Medieval, Fantasy, Pike&Muskets.
Thanks

Even in the US, I find the Baccus is the best value for the money in all of those periods.

Irregular in the UK

Irregular is probably the cheapest.

Baccus are beautiful though.

Irregular – and I have quite a lot of 6mm figures from Irregular, 4 (is it more?) HoTT armies, Renaissance Italians, Ottomans a few other bits and bobs – are at the more basic end. You can certainly tell what things are, but the sculpts are more workmanlike. Hasn't stopped me buying quite a lot though, and they are cheaper.

OP, look at who offers what, see what you like, and buy that.

Don't forget about Heroics and Ros. They have been around forever, some very nice figs, very affordable and a huge selection. I have a lot of them as well as Baccus and I personally think H&R look better as massed troops, as do Irregular, which can be used with H&R. But you can't go wrong with Baccus either, a high quality product.

Baccus is not compatible with the above due to scale creep but it does work with Adler. These are the four main suppliers of what is really 5-8mm.

Agree with Tortorella – have Adler, H&R and Baccus and like all but you can't mix H & R with Baccus or Adler in the same unit – as noted, Baccus and Adler work well together

Irregular and H&R are the cheapest and form the vast bulk of my 6mm collection. Although Irregular look a bit rough, they paint up really well.

Not a big fan of the 'heroic' 6mm stuff (iirc Baccus vehicles are around 1/240th) but I do have one Baccus ACW army I picked up second hand.

At the moment, UK prices look like this AFAIK:

Rapier Miniatures (Ancients, Medievals, ACW, Fantasy):

Baccus Miniatures (Comprehensive):
96 Infantry £7.20 GBP (£6); 45 Cavalry £8.40 GBP (£7)
7.5p/Inf Fig, 18.66p/Cav Fig

Irregular Miniatures (Very Comprehensive):

7.33p/Inf Fig, 17.6p/Cav Fig (a bit more for C20 and C21 ranges WW2 11p/Inf Fig, 22p/Cav Fig)

Heroics & Ros (Comprehensive):
50 Infantry £4.50 GBP; 21 Cavalry £4.50 GBP
9p/Inf Fig, 21.4p/Cav Fig

GHQ (WW2 & Modern):
60 Infantry £11.95 GBP; 30 Cavalry £11.95 GBP/£12.95

Mainforce (WW2 & Modern):
4 Infantry £0.50 GBP

Scotia (C20):

Adler (WW2, Horse & Musket):
4 Infantry £0.32 GBP 2 Cavalry £0.35 GBP 32 Infantry or 8 Cavalry £2.75 GBP (not sure if this last figure is correct, seems pricey…it is the listed price for AWI cavalry. Most cavalry is at the lower price)
8-8.6p/Inf Fig, 17.5-34p/Cav Fig

Perfect Six (Fantasy):
16-20p per foot figure

2d6 Wargaming (Dark Ages, Feudal Japan, WW2):

5.66p/Inf Fig

8.85p/Inf Fig, 20p/Cav Fig

CP Models (SF)
20p/Fig

If price is the only consideration, it looks to me like Rapier and Scotia are your best bets, dependent upon period. However, most ranges are fairly similarly priced, so often the best advice is just to choose the figures you like best. Since P&P depends on where you are buying, I have ignored this, although it can make a difference. GHQ and Microworld (both producers of very nice figures) will be significantly cheaper in North America, I imagine.

Thanks Whirlwind, that is really helpful.

Whirlwind15 Sep 2021 1:47 a.m. PST

No worries Martin. I should just add that these are for the basic 'pack' from each manufacturer, however they are sold. You can reduce the price in some cases with the manufacturer's deals. For instance, in one of Baccus' infantry reinforcement packs of £19.80 GBP for 288 figures, the price drops to 6.875p/fig. I haven't priced up an Irregular Army Pack, an Adler regiment or a GHQ combat command and so on, but there may be other savings to be had in them.
