I recently released a new version of the Berthier Campaign Manager software.

To test the changes out prior to release I ran a short solo campaign. I used One Hour Wargames rules to adjudicate the tabletop battles.

You can read about how the campaign went here -

Very interesting. I did not realize Berthier would work for solo campaigning.

Yeah Bill it works for solo reasonably well.

The ArmyPlan module in particular helps with solo play. It allows you to set up to 5 different movement plans for a side and one plan is randomly chosen. Then in Berthier you move the units but you don't see the orders they are acting under. You keep this up until there is a contact. You can keep using ArmyPlan – you just come up with a couple of different strategic movement options for a side whenever you need to.

Here is a blog entry from a Berthier user showing how it was used for a solo naval campaign where the game played out realistically without there ever being a battle.

Interestingly enough William Silvester in his book The Solo Wargaming Guide came up with a similar approach to what I developed for Berthier. He called it the Solo Campaign Mobilization Rules (SCMR).
