Is there a period of historical wargaming which you are on the brink of getting into?

John the OFM01 Sep 2021 1:50 p.m. PST

I keep stepping back from War of 1812.
I have plenty of Indians. I have plenty of militia that nobody will mind.
It's the big step of getting Regulars that deters me. And annoyingly, the Americans keep upgrading their uniforms.
I know there are small battles. But I know myself too well.

Sengoku Japan. I have some minis, and even some buildings- no time to paint them up to the standard I desire.

15mm Fantasy. Hordes of unpainted lead (some for more than 20 years)

Can't seem to find rules that fit my view. Most are for small tables and few figures. I want Pellenor Feilds!

Cardinal Ximenez01 Sep 2021 2:42 p.m. PST

Siege of Troy
I have the figures. All Foundry. Collected the armies slowly over many years. Saving it as my first retirement project.

cfielitz01 Sep 2021 2:42 p.m. PST

AWI. I've gotten a few rules books, but have yet to settle on scale. I am leaning heavily towards 6mm just for cost, storage, and speed of painting sake.

Personal logo Herkybird Supporting Member of TMP01 Sep 2021 2:52 p.m. PST

AWI for me too, painted the British, just them pesky Rebels to do!

Personal logo Stosstruppen Supporting Member of TMP01 Sep 2021 3:06 p.m. PST

Indian Mutiny, War of 1812, and Warring States China. Of the three the first two are likely. There is an 1812 supplement for RF&F, so 15mm set up for that is doable. Indian Mutiny has me perplexed, I know a guy for 28mm and it is tempting to do it with TMWWBK rules. Warring States would be cool but I am rather ambivalent about it right now.

nnascati Supporting Member of TMP01 Sep 2021 3:10 p.m. PST

Pretty much any period I don't already have figures for.

Col Durnford01 Sep 2021 3:20 p.m. PST

So many that have been out there. About a year ago my unpainted true 25mm samurai were about to be sold off. I took an inventory and decided they were too good to sell. That resulted in a bunch of purchases.

Sitting in the wings are India mutiny, English Civil War, and Imperial Rome.

I currently do not have any figures purchased, however, if I get a good deal on used figures…

War of 1812, Mexican-American War, French Intervention in Mexico (1862-1866), all playable with Regimental Fire & Fury and my existing terrain (though I would probably feel compelled to add a few hundred cacti for the Mexico gaming). I've managed to turn down golden opportunities to buy ready-to-play armies for each of these periods already, but I'm not sure I can do that again.

Anglo-Dutch Wars naval. I have always loved the ships, and even own a few, but the battles were just TOO BIG to put on a miniatures table, so I have always balked. I am always keeping my eyes open for the right rules anyway.

1882 Anglo-Egyptian war. Dumb idea – I own zero miniatures for it, I'm not into "colonials", and the battles were boring and one-sided – but I have all the Royal Navy ironclads that bombarded Alexandria on my wishlist anyway.

Franco-Prussian War. I have the figures and terrain, but I can't find a way to wargame it that I enjoy. If I could, I might expand my collection to include 1866 Austrians and 1859 Italians too.

Napoleonics. I have thousands of painted figures, but no rules I like to play. I keep trying to change that. Maybe one day it'll work.

Gear Pilot01 Sep 2021 3:48 p.m. PST

Every time I think that I may want to start something new, I just think about all that unpainted lead, and decide not to.

Chimpy01 Sep 2021 3:57 p.m. PST

Franco Prussian war since the Perry plastic kit came out. Also Zulu War for the same reason.

Also war of 1812 but like I need more Napoleonic uniforms to paint like a hole in the head.

But reason has so far prevailed and I'm working on the lead pile – randomly as the mood takes me.

Berzerker7301 Sep 2021 4:23 p.m. PST

Teutonic Knights in 28 mm and their Eastern Crusades for Lion Rampant, this way the army can be small in size.

rustymusket01 Sep 2021 4:23 p.m. PST

AWI skirmish in 28mm. I keep wavering on whether or not it is worth starting.

Blasted Brains01 Sep 2021 4:42 p.m. PST

NO!!!! Way too many already – though by some standards above a lot since I have a bunch where I haven't started the painting, I just have all the figures I'll need.

I've been "on the brink" of the Thirty Years War for about thirty years. Mexican American War as well.

The RCW, the French Intervention in Mexico, the Sudan, the various wars of liberation in South America…

19th Century Colonial Wars – I have stacks of British, Zulus, and Mahdists, but not yet painted. And I really want some Boers….and probably some more British for them to fight as well.

And Eastern European Renaissance armies.

Those are the main two.

cavcrazy01 Sep 2021 7:18 p.m. PST

Zulu war…..I have an Old Glory card, so it is very very tempting.

79thPA Supporting Member of TMP01 Sep 2021 7:48 p.m. PST

Add the Peninsula, and Plains Indian Wars to my list as well.

Perris070701 Sep 2021 8:06 p.m. PST

28mm Franco Prussian.

raylev301 Sep 2021 9:05 p.m. PST

Wellington in India….so tempting! I've researched it and identified 28mm figures, but haven't taken the leap.

I had played on the edges of 15mm Napoleionics for years. Had painted some figures. But so many of our group had hundreds of painted and based figures already. But a few weeks ago something just snapped. I decided on the rules. Battalions is the unit scale. Everybody else here plays brigades. I like battalions as it is the only way to properly represent the variety of British units and their uniforms.

I wanted to do all AB figures but I had bags and bags of OG figures for 1815. So I decided to send those off to be Painted. All line British. The British Guard and Hanoverians will be AB.

I painted the QB farm complex and will start on some other Belgian farm buildings. I just figured I am not getting any younger. If I am ever going to do it, now is the time. Napoleonics is really the hardest period to get into. But that is a story for another thread.

ECW in 15mm. I bought and even painted a regiment years ago. But other people in my group already have them. So why should I?

SYW in 15mm, big commitment. I just can't pull the trigger.

War of 1812, I have been interested for years but AWI has supplanted it.

Mexican-American War, for once I know what rules I will use "Santa Anna Rules" but I doubt I will every do it.

1914 Western Front. I had planned to do it in 28mm. Then I came to my senses and sold off all the 28mm and plan to switch to 15mm. But that is as far as I have gotten.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine01 Sep 2021 10:25 p.m. PST

Ever since the Perry's released miniatures for it I've been resisting the War of Triple Alliance. I have some Ospreys and a wargamers guide book and the Red shirted Paraguayans look so good.

I also recently came across Sludge which is marketing it's self as a Post Apocalyptic, Blackpowder, Fantasy game the stuff posted online is intriguing and I like the idea of kit bashing miniatures from various plastic sets.

Have too many already … lol.

Billy Goat Wargaming02 Sep 2021 1:42 a.m. PST

Russian Civil War. I've always been fascinated by the period since school, 35 years ago.

15mm Peter Pig will be how I do it. Possibly make a start by the end of the year… But I've said that before 🤣😅😂

BillyNM02 Sep 2021 2:24 a.m. PST

Without number, the latest flitting through my fickle mind's eye are Colonial Sudan (15/20mm), Franco-Prussian (10/15mm) and French Wars of Religion (15mm).

14th NJ Vol02 Sep 2021 6:34 a.m. PST

SYW. Ouch. So to scratch that itch I went into War 1812. Less figures. My wife is relived once I explained how many less figures I needed.

Doug MSC Supporting Member of TMP02 Sep 2021 6:45 a.m. PST

I've been tempted to do the Franco-Prussian War in 40mm or 54mm. I have resisted so far. Haven't found the figures that push me over the edge.

bobm195902 Sep 2021 7:57 a.m. PST

I've been on the brink of Marlburian for twenty years. All those shades of pale grey…

AWI 15 or 28…not sure yet…
19th Century Colonial Wars…so darn tempting.
17th-early 18th Century stuff… I finally got a copy of Witchfinder General…

GatorDave Supporting Member of TMP02 Sep 2021 9:29 a.m. PST

7 years war. Once I finish up my WSS maybe that's next. Wait I don't think I have ever quite finished a period….

Huscarle02 Sep 2021 10:24 a.m. PST

I have the figures, and some are slowly getting painted, but it will probably be some years yet, as so many other things to do:-
28mm Sassanid Persians (to oppose my Late Romans).
28mm Wars of the Roses
28mm Pulp (mainly Bob Murch's figures, around 400+)
15mm 17th Century Eastern Europe (By Fire and Sword KS).
I have loads of other figures, but those projects are probably dead & buried…but one never knows if Resurrection Day will come around for one of them.

Confederate Irish & ECW. Have the figures, not sure when they might ever might make it onto the painting bench…

Frederick Supporting Member of TMP02 Sep 2021 10:37 a.m. PST

Brink of ECW/Thirty Years War and like Fusilier Dan been there about 30 years – I finally did break down and get the
Teutonic Knights 'cause as Bezerker 73 noted the armies are pretty small – mine is one unit of mounted knights, one unit of foot knights, a couple of small crossbow units and the plan is for one unit of men at arms on foot – and that will be it!

Dagwood02 Sep 2021 12:38 p.m. PST

Colonial. I have both 15mm (painted) and 28mm (unpainted) Zulu War figures, and 20mm FFL (unpainted). I haven't done much with them, and not anything for quite some time …

Shagnasty Supporting Member of TMP02 Sep 2021 2:41 p.m. PST

I'm with Gear Pilot. Plus I have been buying other peoples' stuff for periods I already have. I now have 9 separate armies for the TYW/ECW period!

Olaf 0302 Sep 2021 5:12 p.m. PST

I second the War of the Triple Alliance. The figures that Perry Miniatures has are beautiful. I really don't want to start a new period right now but it is very tempting.

Wargamer Blue03 Sep 2021 4:15 p.m. PST

Pony Wars, now that I have ordered the rules.

Dashetal04 Sep 2021 6:29 a.m. PST

If I was going to it would be the Triple Alliance. Right now I am planning on expanding and replacing my Rif War figures with the forthcoming Baraka figures.

14Bore04 Sep 2021 10:16 a.m. PST

More IF, Historicon goes off and I get to go, and I find WWII armor and want to pull the trigger What a Tanker will happen.

BillyNM05 Sep 2021 2:01 a.m. PST

Aaaaargh! It's fewer not less.

KSmyth06 Sep 2021 7:08 p.m. PST

Cruel Seas. The miniatures are so beautiful and a number of my friends have models for the Channel and the Mediterranean. But I already have these miniatures in 1/600. It's hard to justify.

The Last Conformist07 Sep 2021 7:21 a.m. PST

I have quite a few I've only been deterred from by the consideration I ought to finish a half-painted project or three first.

Uesugi Kenshin Supporting Member of TMP08 Sep 2021 3:34 p.m. PST

-Battletech (Alpha Strike vatiant).
-Horus Heresy (I've been "almost" there for about 8 years!).
-Franco-Prussian War (want to use the Perry minis but don't have rules or time right now).
-Ancients (big battles in 28mm)
-Samurai in Korea in 28mm.
-War of the Roses in 28mm.
-Dark Ages in 28mm (Vikings, Saxons, Arabs).
-Aztecs in 28mm.
-Whfb….just waiting on the new rules.
-Early part of the Italian Wars in 28mm.
