It's not unusual to hear it among military folks on the phone, in small meetings, etc. After 20 years in the Army, and a break before becoming an Army/DIA government civilian, it was common enough that you didn't notice it any more than you'd notice someone saying "got it." |
robert piepenbrink | 29 Aug 2021 3:58 p.m. PST |
Agree with raylev. It's Greenspeak. We can probably put together a glossary if you need one, OFM. |

In aviation speak you either say "roger" or "wilco"; but never combine the two and say "roger-wilco". Roger = I understand your last transmission Wilco = I will comply with your instructions |

Never on a naval RT circuit. It is either Roger Over or Roger Out. |
wakenney | 29 Aug 2021 6:47 p.m. PST |
dBerczerk, shorten that to affirm for proper coms. c I likely use Roger daily, but it's DoD so that's expected. Copy that is i heard you, Roger that is i understood you, and wilco is that I'll do it but blame you if it's wrong. |
USAFpilot | 29 Aug 2021 6:50 p.m. PST |
I can't speak to radio communications other than with regard to flying military aircraft which is highly disciplined. Not only have I never heard "roger that" over the radios; I've hardly ever heard "roger". Usually you would just respond with your call sign. Now later at the bar over a few drinks, someone might say "roger that" in a comedic fashion. |

I worked for a time in a police and emergency services communications centre and anyone on the radios were trained to say "roger", but not "roger that". However, it crept in from time to time. |

Its incorrect, but it is used in the military as a kind of slang for, "you betcha." |

Royal Armoured Corps B3 level signals course (1983), the term "Roger" is used to indicate that you have understood something in a radio transmission. "That" is often tagged on if you might have a further question "Roger that, when will further orders be given?" and has, indeed, migrated into common daily military speak. However the word "that" is not officially taught as part of voice procedure such as "Wilco" and "Roger", Tally Ho! |

I actually heard a paraglider marshal say just that on his radio last week. |
cantbeatdavy | 30 Aug 2021 2:28 a.m. PST |
All radio comms in work finish with a roger. If your pissed off with the request you add a sharp short ‘that'….. to the end. It would appear to be successful in getting across your annoyance!! J |

I'd agree with the bulk of the comments in that "Roger that" was seldom used in formal Army radio communications, but in the Army and DIA it was ubiquitous in telephonic and face to face conversations. |
The Virtual Armchair General | 30 Aug 2021 10:29 a.m. PST |
Yep! Use it nearly daily when text Skyping with colleagues. So, how fast would John's hair catch fire if we started replying to him, "Roger THIS!" TVAG |

I work in IT at a utility company and we have a fair smattering of vets, especially in project management. More Navy than other forces, I think. Anyway occasionally on a conference call about how to fix something, an IT manager or director will make a decision what to do, provide a clarifying directive, and the response will be "Roger that". I've used it myself, although more often in a quick email response than verbally. And I've heard an IT director, sensing the technical people might have uncertainty about the business decision that was made, say "can I get a 'Roger that'?", meaning yes we mean this and I need to hear you confirm you'll do it. |
