… Terrorism "More than 200 former Guantanamo Bay inmates who were released have returned to terrorism following their release – with 151 still at large, according to newly declassified documents. The declassified Office of National Intelligence report, which is dated December 18, 2020, highlights that 229 former Guantanamo prisoners have reengaged in acts of terrorism and killing Americans since their release. Data included in the report shows that 125 former prisoners are confirmed to have reengaged in acts of terrorism since their release, while an additional 104 are currently suspected of reengaging…" Main page link Taliban Appoint Ex-Guantanamo Bay Detainee As New Afghan Government Defence Minister link Armand |

No surprise there … didn't think those type would return to being goat herders, etc. The good thing is if we are lucky we can/did kill some of them on the battlefield. Or one can become the Talibans' spokesman … Who now tells the USA when they have to leave A'stan. Or there will be "trouble" … So now the USA is taking orders from terrorists ? |

No surprises. It's just like other criminal scumbags. Leopards don't change their spots. |

The real surprise would be the ones who did not. |

Sickening. They should have been treated like the Germans who were not in their uniforms during the Battle of the Bulge, when caught by the Americans. That is 100% effective against future recidivism. Sadly, America has gone soft on crime, criminals, and terrorists, AND in fact, some (far too many) of our present leaders actually aid and abet these criminals and terrorists with their speeches, writings, and actions. This WILL lead to more chaos in our communities, and possibly even the downfall of our civilization. |

Nick +1 Yes, the US military has CRT/1619, woke, diversity training etc. But as we see our enemies don't waste time on such … But under this new leadership, and thinking from a few in the USA. The military does not have to learn how to fight & win wars ever again. But all military branches with have complete diversity, wokeness, CRT, etc., training etc., regardless of their capabilities, etc. I didn't care who was flying the UH-1, UH-60 or C-130, etc. I was flying in. Just that they were good capable pilots. Their race, sex nor politics didn't matter. As a Mech Co Cdr, I didn't check on the race, etc., of my 14 M113 drivers. Just so they knew how to drive the vehicle and were good at it … Otherwise nothing else mattered. |

I'm not sure how useful that training will be in evacuating our citizens and troops from Afghanistan, but then again, I am a cynic on matters like that. Makes me wonder when the new curriculum will kick in, for our troops to "embrace your inner jihadi" like some in charge appear to be doing, or did some time ago, trying to make friends with Iran's leadership, and now, with the Talis. |

The statement is confusing. One the one hand, if they "returned to terorism", whatever that means, it means they locked up the right people in the first place, right? Was anything done at Guantanamo to change their minds? Did *they* get diversity training? Was there any rehabilitation? I don't recall hearing about that. If there was not any effort to change them, is there any surprise whatsoever that they were unchanged? And "return" suggests that they were terrorists before. I suspect that's true, but there were not trials. It's possible that they were not terrorists before, but after being locked up with terrorists for a decade they were converted. Unless we talk about how we're defining "terrorist" etc we don't know, we're assuming common definitions, common understanding, and a lot of other things. So it's just a mess. I don't think there was ever a clear plan. I'm happy to live in a society that doesn't just shoot captured enemies. I'm happy to live in a society that doesn't just shoot prisoners. The only choices were executing them, locking them up forever without a trial, and releasing them. Releasing them after years means they have no home, no job, no strong connections to anything except terrorism, so it was unlikely they were going to do anything else. I seem to recall one guy was captured a second time and he had a really expensive prosthetic leg paid for by US taxpayers. People talk about arming our enemies, in this case we re-legged an enemy. |

Lot of bad readers here. Instead of criticizing "woke CRT" or whatever, maybe actually look at the report? The report concerns 729 detainees. Only 129 of those are post 2009. Of those only 10 are confirmed re-engaging in whatever "terrorism" means. That is 5.1% , according to the report, with 2 deceased and 8 at large. Pre Jan 2009 is confirmed 115 of 532 (21.6%) with 34 deceased and 20 in foreign custody, leaving 61 at large (11%). So, pre 2009, 78% or 3/4 were not in this group and post 2009 almost 95% were not. But please do go on as to why mass executions are preferable. |

I don't think anyone said anything about mass executions… And the numbers say few return to their former jihadi ways. But as we know … it only takes a few to do a lot of damage. But please do go on as to why mass executions are preferable. As I said it is easier to kill them once they return to the battlefield. They are enemy combatants again. Which makes them viable targets like the other terrorists they work with. As far as "woke CRT, etc." training in the military … Is a waste of time … It has little to nothing to do with warfighting skills. I may be old, but I remember how to train & lead troops … |

I don't have a problem with shooting prisoners who are: murderous radicals that don't follow the Geneva Convention, kill others (including civilians on purpose) in heinous ways for sport (beheadings, burning them alive, drowning them, or torturing them to death), aren't part of a military unit fighting for a recognized country, are not in uniform in order to blend in with civilians, AND use civilians whenever possible as 'human-shields". Short, timely, and fair, battlefield or military trials followed by swift punishment ARE perfectly acceptable to me. I suspect your numbers ARE very, VERY low, jamemurp, since we don't have a lot of intel on the actions of ALL involved and released. Also, I suspect a LOT of the 6,000+ prisoners just freed from prison in Afghanistan WILL indeed return to their former, radical, murderous ways, AND probably already have. |
jamemurp | 26 Aug 2021 12:45 p.m. PST |
Again, not my numbers, it is a declassified Office of National Intelligence report. The fact that it doesn't conform to your expectations is irrelevant unless you have other valid data. Again, I am disappointed in the bloodthirstiness when the government has shown ineptitude across administrations in handling these issues. Most of these detainees are low level, at most, and many are just farmers, Bedouins, and other civilians who posed absolutely no threat to Americans other than those who invaded their country. If they had evidence of actual criminal involvement, they should have shown it to a court (military or civilian) and handle them appropriately. The fact that they don't tells you everything you need to know. This is backed up by the fact that even by the US govt's own numbers only a small percentage are getting back into trouble (whatever "terrorism" means). |

If just one former prisoner returned to fight US soldiers, than that is one too many. We should never have flown any prisoners to Cuba. We should have put them all in chains on a ship and then when the ship was half way across the ocean there could have been an accident with the ship sinking and only the crew survives. Think of all the problems this would have avoided. |

This administration wants to send more money to Afghanistan in the form of foreign aid. It's not enough that they left billions $ of military equipment and weapons behind.🤮 |
