I was reading Hit Hard (Williams) because it was recommended in the notes at the end of Patton;s Best. As I perused the last two pages that list the books in the series I was surprised to see that I have read several of the series and liked them a lot. Which means I should probably take a look at the rest of the series.
Here's my recommendations and possibly future purchases, what are yours?
Company Commander (MacDonald) – autobiographical. This is not the thrilling running, jumping, shooting personal narrative, but the point of view of a company commander – moving platoons, trying to set up positions, keeping track of where everyone is, managing communications. This is a different and very interesting perspective. More readable than Rommel's Attacks (at least the translation that I have). Highly recommended.
Hit Hard (Williams) – like Company Commander, except for tanks. Not a lot of details about driving and shooting, but a lot about figuring out what's going on, getting things where they need to be, interacting with battalion and division level people, both good and very bad. This is about the 761st battalion, which had black soldiers up to the level of lieutenant, so there is a lot of race issues here. In fact, the entire first half of the book is them stuck in a training camp expecting never to be sent into combat. Author is extremely honest about everything, even when his feelings do him no credit. I found this really hard to put down.
Enemy At The Gates (Craig) – I read this long ago so I can't say much more than that I liked it.
I'm thinking about getting/reading Boynton's Black Sheep book, Patton's War As I Knew It, and maybe some others when they are relevant to whatever I am reading/playing.
What do you all think?
