During the Napoleonic Wars, did the Ocean going navies of France or England, use any schooners combat other than as Privateers? I know about the use of schooners on the Great Lakes, I am wondering about the Ocean combats? I have read about Brig/Corvette and Frigate actions, but nothing about schooners. I thank you in advance for your info and help. |

Absolutely yes. HMS Pickle, the ship that brought news of Trafalgar back to England was a schooner. |

Schooners and cutters were very active in inshore operations all up and down the coast, from Denmark down to Spain. |

Were they not frequently used as packets? Looks like HMS Pickle was a schooner. |

Funny thing about the HMS Pickle is that she dumbed her 9 prd guns so she could beat a frigate to deliver the news and collect the reward for the news of Nelson and the victory. |

Not so many stories about battles with schooners, as they were more frequently used as couriers between fleet units or inshore support. |

Sloops and Brigs by James Henderson: "An account of the smallest vessels of the Royal Navy during the great wars 1793-1815. Look out for the action between the packet Antelope and the French privateer Atalante. There are also plenty of schooner actions scattered throughout James' Naval History … . |

Some evidence in the "Losses" section of von Pivka's "Navies of the Napoleonic Era", too. But not many mentioning schooners, considering the much greater number of ships lost to frigates and ships of the line. I forgot about that one in Henderson's book. |
