Does anyone own, or have played a game with these?

I see mention that appears it is a set of rules for use with miniatures, but other than the photo of the cover, and the info in the topic title, that's all I've been able to find about it.

I was thinking a WWII, or Vietnam/other era Patrol-type game, for man-to-man combat, and/or squad level battles might be fun. Some I've seen are for boardgames, but I'm looking for something I can use with miniatures.

Patrols with troops in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Falklands, and more modern wars, and perhaps even Sci-Fi scenarios should prove interesting.

It would be fun to have the option to run sweeps to root out snipers in the countryside, or towns/villages/cities too, if those are available as well.

I imagine I can come up with some encounter charts, and/or rules for the above, but why reinvent the wheel if someone has already done it, especially if it has been done well.

So, anything out there available for a reasonable price?

I seem to recall those rules, percentage based combat if I can recall correctly, lol, old school as they would say.
Something similar "percentage" based is "Normandy Firefight". I would say it's more of an updated system, my only gripe is the wound system and you count up the amount of bullets (Rof) per weapon. A little RPG with Characters, but not much, only running half square to full squad at most, basically infantry only. It's good for what it is.

Check out Patrol:WW2 on wargamevault. Its squad based with lite RPG character traits. Interesting scenario system, a little crunchy combat but not overwhelming. Maybe exactly what you are looking for.

Nuts! By two hour wargame is always recommended, but you either love or hate the system. If rules are not your cup of tea, the ideas in the rules are worth having and the scenario creation system is also pretty clever.

The old "Battleground WW2" by easy eight is a step up from the other rules, more squad based, but you still control individual move/combat, and it's more inclined to add armor, at guns, artillery, etc… Running a platoon or possibly more is doable.

Hope that helps a bit. I am always intrigued by others approach to this combat level of rules and looking for new rules. I blame it on the the assault on the farmhouse in the movie " A walk in the sun".

Let me know if that helps or you have any questions.

SPI had a boardgame of that name, at man-to-man level it would be easy enough to port to figures.

Two Hour Wargames makes a series of skimirh games that I love. The basic engine is the same for all, you just swap out the stats and chrome.

The core game is available free to try:

I run the Vietnam game and it can have an RPG lite feel if you want, with soldiers having skills and attributes (like yella belly or brawler).

The other SPI man to man action game from the same time was called Sniper! It had an urban map.

Two games I have used with miniatures designed by Craig Taylor

Sniper! was so detailed, you had to roll dice for walking down stairs, lest you fall.
If that's the level of detail you want, go for it.

I have a copy of the original S&T, issue Vol. 1 No. 7 from August 1967 – long before Dunnigan or SPI. Patrol was written by Terry Griner, whom I used to game with occasionally back in the day. They are approximately two pages of small print which might be four or five pages typewritten. Let me know if you have further interest.

Thanks for the clarification, Big Red. I had no idea!

Nice link Stephen m. That is a different game from the one the op was asking about.

stephen m19 Aug 2021 5:26 p.m. PST

I was hoping they were the same or a development. Looked the ones the OP was looking for on BGG and discovered they are not the same. Pity as the BGG looks interesting. Oh well.

Stephen M,
I have (had?) the game you posted the link to (which is the same as that shown on BGG). Am in the middle of a retirement/move and if I kept it (there was a purge as well), it is boxed up somewhere at the moment; I'm not sure when it will resurface. If I come across it before I forget this conversation, I'll work on a way to send it to you if you wish.

Thanks for all the replies and info.

Big Red and MTnest, I am interested in them, if you care to sell, or share more details. I can be reached at:

Obviously, as mentioned, I'm interested in other Patrol rules and ideas for running them too, for WWII, Modern, and even Sci-Fi periods.

Thanks for the other links guys.

I am aware of the THWG rules, and how they work. They might work, though are a little more simple than what I'm after.

The Patrol rules PDF is neat too, though perhaps a bit more complex that I'm interested in.

Looking for the Goldilocks "just right" option, a bit more simplistic than a boardgame I suspect, but a bit more complex than some others.

Olde Skool, D100 rules might be just the ticket, with lots of outcomes and some crunchiness, but not second-by-second, or micro-second activation points.

Like move "X" distance, roll for encounter(s), events, disasters, firefights, ambushes, etc., etc., rinse, and repeat.

Perhaps with some sort of random terrain generator too, to be determined as you move along the trail or road, or cross country, etc.. Maybe you don't have a map, or the map isn't an accurate as it should be.

I suspect you may be better off looking at a set of figure-gaming skimrish rules, this video lists the one i have looked at.

The advantage of boardgames is recreating an actual battle in a format which is quick to play. I did this with the SPI napoleonic quad rules and it works well. This video outlines some details of the conversion. youtu.be/5Fwp4bPoaQM
There are other videos which cover actual games, etc.
I am currently converting SPI's Modern battles quad, but that is not a skimrish situation with each figure representing a battalion.
