All, I just watched The East, (well most of it). Here are my thoughts. It was overall a very well done film about to me at least a fairly obscure subject. The attitudes of the Dutch to the native Indonesians was fairly typical of colonial attitudes everywhere. "These monkeys could never run a country", "look, he climbs just like a monkey". It was a good study of soldiers in a difficult situation. In a way the film reminded me of The Thin Red Line, in that it has a slightly philosophical bent to it. The action sequences were limited but felt realistic. The real bad guy in the film seems to be The Turk and his gestapo like special force. His terror tactics are pretty tough to watch. Overall, it was worth the $4.99 USD rental fee. Is it gamable? Honestly, I'm not sure. You don't really see the rebels, and the attitudes portrayed as I said are not pleasant. I said I watched most of the film. Twenty minutes from the end, the power went out for some unknown reason. When it came back on, I went to restart the film where I left off, but it went back to the beginning. I just didn't feel like sitting through 2 1/2 hours again. If anyone else has seen it, please PM me and tell me the ending. |
