Men,

Those of you who play Warhammer Ancient Battles, is there a required number of models in a cavalry unit? In the ECW variant, all the examples show only 5 models. Is this just a reflection of space in the book or is that the norm during games? The rules also state that when a unit is under 5 models it automatically flees the field. This would seem to make cavalry units awful fragile.I

Thanks for any clarification,
Steve

In Warhammer minimum unit size is 5 models but you can have as many as you like in a unit normally (although some army lists limit the number of certain troop types you can have in any army). In all my years playing Warhammer 8-10 is the usual number that people go for in cavalry units.

10 was the norm with my group back in the day.

The minimum number is five, but if you lose one, the unit flees.

Our club, where WAB was popular, used 12 figures as the standard. Some used 10 others 14 depending on the situation, army, and/or points.

12 was and is my usual number –
If for no other reason (than those mentioned above) than most cav figures come in packs of three.

Thanks men.

Basic cavalry does not receive rank bonus in WAB, so there is limited benefit in fielding more than one rank of them. This limits the effectiveness of large cavalry units.

That said, some of the heavier cavalry can receive rank bonus of +1 (or even more), so they may be worth fielding in larger and deeper units. The points cost may be a bit hefty, though.

I don't have my books at hand currently, so cannot check any specific examples.

In WAB units of less than five models that lose a combat will auto flee, and cannot rally if they panic.
Usually players add more models to a unit to pad that baseline. Units can stick around and get wiped out to the last model, but this is rare. Usually this happens when a small unit (such as cavalry) wins a combat even though they are reduced to less than five models. They stick around and fight again, pursue, or fall back as normal. Only the loser auto breaks if less than five.
