…in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Eras"
by Daniel MacCannell. Published by Pen & Sword Military in 2021.
I seem to have suffered a Bobby Ewing moment. I thought I very recently read a thread on this book on this forum – that's why I ordered it from Amazon. To keep the moderators happy, this is a review not an advert. The book arrived today so only had chance for a brief skim so far. Like most of Pen & Sword's output, it's beautifully produced and has extensive colour illustrations throughout. It appears to be very detailed and I'm looking forward to a deep dive into my particular interest – the Martello Towers.
Apologies if I've given oxygen to the bullies but I'm a little confused.

Reviews are fine. Duplication of new product announcements which are already in Hobby News are the problem area.

I used to pass many a Martello tower along the sea-front from Brightlingsea to Walton-on-the-Naze when I lived in Clacton-On-Sea. In fact, I (and some of my mates) used to be able bunk into Butlins holiday camp via its Martello tower because the tall iron fencing used to stop abruptly and vertically by the angle of the tower's wall. They had barbed wire filling the gap, but with a bit of 'contortioning' we could squeeze through. We had many a good summers night in the night-club there and also many a 'conquest'…Oh, happy days!

It's nice to see at least one of the Martello towers had it's uses. LOL

The towers remain but the Butlins camp is now a housing estate.

James Joyce fans know of at least one Martello tower, the setting for the opening episode of "Ulysses". Now preserved as a museum in Dublin.

There are several Martello Towers in the Kingston Ontario harbour area. One of them 'The Murney Tower' is an active museum and national historic site. It still has the original 32-pounder Blomefield cannon. Here is the site's link;

It showed that it was possible to isolate the tower, breech the local defences and be victorious…

Here is that very tower.

Yup! Unfortunately, time marches on.

Are you familiar with the area? I lived there from 1966 to 1991.

'the Butlins camp is now a housing estate'

So you and your mates sneaking in to the camp and enjoying the facilities for free have caused it's downfall. Shame on you! LOL?

I've now finished this one. Lots of very detailed information and great illustrations, including many Gillray cartoons. However, it seems rather badly structured and therefore not easy to follow. It's interesting to see that the threat of invasion was greater than "conventional" history suggests and, contrary to popular belief, did not end with the Battle of Trafalgar. One for the specialist?
