I'm 3D modeling some Romans at (hopefully) nearly 1:1 scale in 2mm/3mm, with hopefully natural looking formations. I'm trying to decide on the main weapon they should be holding.
In 15mm, I sometimes see a mix of pila and gladius – this would never happen in real life right?
Did all the Legionnaries in a block throw their pila together?
Or would some ranks in the back still be holding onto the pila, with the front having drawn their gladius to engage?
How did these ideas differ between the EIR and Republican era? If anyone knew of a definitive Republican vs. EIR legion summary resource that would be perfect.
Would wargamers general prefer them holding pilum or gladius? My default assumption is that the pilum is most iconic.
Sadly Ancient Battle Formations by Justin Swanton hasn't been too much help here after a quick skim, so some opinions here would be greatly appreciated!
