So why has an ECW blog been cross posted to a WW2 board? If you don't know about the CMSM you really do need to pay attention!

A small museum, packed to the rafters with artefacts. An important SoE collection, the the MoD Donnington Collection of firearms (a comprehensive collection spanning late 19th through to early 21st centuries), Operation Frankton, a very comprehensive uniform collection…

But why has the ECWtravelogue visited what sounds like a WW2 museum? The ground floor houses an arms and armour collection which is very ECW 'heavy'. Amongst the collection: lochaber axe, drum, felt hat, as well as the usual mortuary swords, lobster tail helmets, buff coats, cuirasses, polearms…

Wow, nice collection of helmets and source of interesting info. Nice find.

I like the drum, looks like vertical piles wavy.

Thanks. I thought that too Timbo. Although I'm not prepared to 'have a go' at painting it in 15mm

Nice collection. Are some of the helmets 'Browned', or just the light?

Just a thought KYPD, did you notice any provenance for the drum? Would be cool if it could be tied down to a particular family, even regiment. Perhaps their flags were also red with pile wavy?

Not likely but you never know!

Only information on the label was 'Royalist marching drum c1645' then description of how drums were used in battle, and note that skin was a modern replacement.

An interesting idea, which had crossed my mind too.

The other two drums that I know of from this era – the Dutch drum c1640 Royal Armouries, Leeds is plain golden ochre colour with a crown and cipher;

the other, in Chirk Castle is so dark it could be black with a coat of arms upon it.

Oho very neat, the Chirk Castle one looks like a recognisable coat of arms that should be traceable.

Here's a nice pic of Charles I and his secretary Walker with a drum, apparently c1650. link

Drum has Royal coat of arms so perhaps Kings Lifeguard.
