…insurgency in Mozambique

"In recent days, military advance teams from South Africa and Botswana began to deploy to northern Mozambique to support governments forces in their fight against a growing Islamist insurgency. They will join Rwandan combat troops and military training contingents from Europe and the United States. But there is little cause for optimism. There is a significant risk that current regional support for Mozambique will not achieve its objectives and that a larger international military coalition will be required to quell the fighting.

Mozambique doesn't seem capable of containing the growing conflict within its borders. Over the last year or more, Islamist extremists have taken control of large parts of its northern provinces, capturing large towns from government forces on several occasions, most recently including the regional centre of Palma. According to the United Nations, as many as 1 million people may have been displaced by the fighting. Mozambique's government has floundered its response and attempts to use foreign mercenaries have failed.

Over the last 12 months, Mozambique's neighbours, including South Africa, the local regional power, have become increasingly fearful of the potential for the conflict to affect other parts of the region, through population displacements and the spread of extremist ideologies…"

Lesotho and Zimbabwe have also joined in.Portugal will be their soon ,ironically.Russias Wagner group was hired to stop it ,but like everywhere else they have been..failed.All they need is to train their Army and prpoperly supply them.Bring in Eeban Barlow and his Ex- Angola war boys and they will show the how ,like they did w/ Executive Outcomes.Good Luck to the men ,they are very good troops.

I hope they succeed, but given vectors thus far, I am pessimistic as to how this will go.

A pity someone isn't trying to rally all of the world to fight against and put a stop to this.

It IS the greatest clear and present danger of our time, though China runs a very close second, and may jump into the lead soon, depending upon how things play out in the Pacific in the near future.

Africa unstable. Shock. Amazement.

Interesting to see how SANDF (South African National Defence Force) goes – they're not what they used to be up to the 1990. They've been gutted in terms of manpower, equipment and training and a lot of the higher officers are now political appointments and many NCOS and officers are now trained in Cuba (SANDF is now getting training from its old enemy)!

Like the Americans did to create those super awesome happy, human rights respecting prosperous democracies in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya and French in Mali?

Maybe it's like time to let the Muslims live how they feel fit.

Let them have their fundamentalism and if they don't like it they can always rebel.

Can the West be sure there won't be any attacks inspired by radical islam ?

arealdeadone17 Aug 2021 4:40 p.m. PST

Ermm…as I've mentioned before and proven with constant barrage of facts:

a.) Most modern Islamic attacks in west are by lone terrorists who have legally emigrated to west or are children of legal migrants.

b.) Large scale terror attacks aren't occurring in west due to massive expansion of surveillance state.

And

c.) An Islamist run Somalia or Mozambique or Mali doesn't pose a threat to citizens of USA or Belgium or New Zealand. It might pose a threat to westerners who go there or more principally western businesses.

And finally

d.) Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar and UAE are Islamist states. Sharia law is practiced informally across much of Islamic world including western allies like Jordan, Pakistan and Morocco. Islamism is growing everywhere including formerly secular countries like Turkey, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Yes it sucks for women and minorities including atheists like me who are killed or in places like Malaysia, Iran and KSA arrested for mere music tastes (I'm a metalhead too – that's banned in a lot of Islamic states and heavy metal is banned in many islamic states).

Still if that's what they largely want then let them have it.

Yes, again I know all that. You do say it often. If there was no AQ or ISIS there would probably be no radical islamic attacks from home made jihadis. Was 9/11 and many other large scale attacks on the West done only by lone wolves ?

Do we want to risk those large scale type attacks to happen again ?

Are you willing to risk other peoples' lives if you only think lone wolves will be the only attacks.

AQ is free to do as they please with the US leaving A'stan. What do you think they are going to plan to do to the West if they get a chance? Are you willing to take that risk ?
