"So, to start off, I want to reaffirm that I love the ruleset for the Middle Earth Strategy Battle Game. I think on the whole this game is both easy to understand while also giving a lot of options and depth for list building (albeit to greater degrees with some factions over others) so that strategy/math-minded people have a lot to keep them engaged in the game. The hobby aspect of the game is also excellent, with a vibrant and positive community that supports the game and make works of art. But every now and then you come across some rules and profiles where you think to yourself, "…are we sure that this is the best way to do this," and today's post is one of those questions. The aim here is to make the game better, and I hope that the love and passion for the game is what comes through in this post. I've been playing this game for over ten years, have loved this game even during the "dark times" when we were getting hardly anything new, and I've only grown in my love and appreciation for the game as the years pass…"

I don't play those rules. I've been playing AD&D, as a Dungeon Master/referee since 1980; I wrote, and self-published, my own miniatures game, back in 1998, so I am familiar with rule compromises employed to create a playable, fun game. The Game vs. Simulation quandary is very familiar to me. At the end of the day, the game designer typically makes sacrifices which are not "realistic", in order to serve up a game which is both fun, and playable, without being too complex, too tedious, and just too much to play. Each such unrealistic game mechanic was likely chosen for a reason. The rules, as written, were made the way they are, because the designer felt they were a compromise they thought worked best, overall. My mantra writing game rules, making referee decisions, has always been, "It's a game -- not a simulation! Make it fun…" Play them as written, or modify them as you deem necessary. In the end, it only matters if you, and your friends, believe that the way you are playing them, is the most fun you can wring out of them, at your gaming table. There is no absolutely right/perfect/correct/whatever, answer. Cheers! |
