Simon Akam says Penguin Random House cancelled his book about the British army, The Changing of the Guard, and demanded back his advance after he refused to let the MoD vet it… The Guardian: link |

An example of good book advertising/promotion. Reminds me of "the torch/knife/goggles that the military do not want you to have" adverts. martin |

disturbing realy, no different that the "fact Checking" going on in the USA right now. we are going to cancel you if the dialogue doesn't agree. uncle Joe is complaining about facebook not doing enough. NPR is complaining about youtube not doing enough. |

They gave him a huge advance (well, to me it would be), and then he wasn't giving them what they think they paid for. So they want the advance back. Am I wrong here? It's like reading a Reddit "toxic mother in law AITA" story. You're getting only one side of the story, so of course we believe the starving artist or author. |

Was the MOD "vetting" a requirement of the publisher? Or that the moD placed in order to allow access to individuals who might comment on recent or current ops, tactics, equipment etc? We've had a few cases in recent years where authors have either used their own knowledge (retired or recently left the MOD / services) and not considered OPSEC which has led to a few raised eyebrows when one reads about something one knows to be classified on the shelves at Waterstones. I wouldn't be surprised if MOD wanted to review in that case – I've been involved in similar things myself fortunately with a highly professional author who was VERY careful not to include anything they shouldn't have) |
