I have been on the fence for awhile now and I think I am ready to take the plunge and purchase a copy of Warlord Games Black Sails. I like to look of the plastic ships (frigates and barks) that come with the game, but not a fan of the resin ships of the line. I have seen the 1/1000 Sails of Glory plastic ships and am quite impressed. I love that they are put together and painted and cheaper than Warlord's resin ships but wonder if they would be bigger that the 1/1200 Warlord ships? I could not find any pictures on the web with a side by side view for reference. Any one here put them side by side? I also checked Ebay but could not find any one selling the plastic sprues so I could pick up some extra frigates and barks. Any one know where I could pick one or more up in the USA? Did Wargames Illistrated magazine ever offer a sprue like the did for the MTB's and ACW for Warlord? If any one has an extra sprue and would like to trade for the ACW figs let me know. I look forward to your help and hopefully pictures of side by sides. Thank you in advance. |

The Warlord Napoleonic Naval are 1/600 I think not 1/1200 Langton's are 1/1200 and they are a lot bigger than them. |

Warlord's Black Seas ships are 1/700, same as Meridian. Most ships of the line were 3rd rates and Warlord's are in plastic (same as their Brigs and Frigates). 1/1000 SoG ships would be smaller although they have a large base. Wargames Illustrated did offer a free brig or frigate sprue but they didn't include sails, ratlines or rigging thread. For USA I don't know of anyone cheaper than NWS Wargaming: link If you have a partner in your project you could split the cost and share a box for less than $10 USD each. For inspiration and practical advise check out JJ's Wargames: all at sea blog:

If I was to pick another game Age of Sail in the Napoleonic era would be fun. Have played a few ages ago and liked it. |
Old Glory | 24 Jul 2021 10:43 a.m. PST |
Take a look at the Old Glory 1/2400 scale ships. They are "playing pieces" --not models and look really great painted and in fleets. No assembly needed --come complete with cast sails and rigging, etc. Made right here in America. Russ Dunaway |

Thanks to you all for your help. I see I was confused on scale with the Black Seas ships. That said, who else does 1/700 scale sailing ships miniatures? Any in plastic? |

Oak & Iron is 1/600, but set 100 years early. Really enjoy the rules, though, and the ships are plastic. |

You should try and get a copy of fighting sales, from SPI. This is a link to the rules, but you need to try and find a 2nd hand copy. Its actually a good set of rules and would be easy to convert into a figure gaming format. PDF link |

If you don't mind a bit of work, try the miniatures from War Artisan, you can build them to various scales: link I'd also recommend the Admirals rules, free from the site warartisan.com/rules And the ships in action: link Jeff has also been working on some semi-flats too:
link War Artisan also does small ships and rules under "Away Borders" |

I suggest giving up the Napoleonic Era altogether- go for Oak & Iron! :D The 17th century naval combat is much more interesting, with 3 combatants (Netherlands, England, and France), more even militarily. O & I also covers pirates! |

The Old Glory ships are a great way to get going in age of sail! You can tackle the entirety of Trafalgar for a quite affordable sum, especially if you spring for the Old Glory Army Membership(worth it to buy Trafalgar- works out to like $150 USD total, mind boggling). I also really like It is Warm Work for fast and easy fleet battles, which is easily gotten from Wargames Vault! |

Hi Vincent, The War of the American Revolution comes very close to even competition as well, especially in the first several years of the conflict. The only weak sister is the Spanish. B |
