Canadian museum rules on firearms: link |

Depending on what was stolen, they may not be able to commit other crimes with them. ie. "Dude, that's a wheel lock, do you even know where to get black powder or how to load that that thing? Eh?"* * That's my pathetic attempt at a Canadian accent. |

I was in a museum where they had a display of 4 rifles that were chained to the table so that but not walk away with them. A matchlock, flintlock, bolt action and automatic. Interesting to feel the weight and other aspects of the rifles. I don't recall what aspects were removed to make them unserviceable. |

Having the personnel experience of sorting out things after someone was accidentally killed with a 120 year old rifle, it does make some sense to make sure the firearms are fairly secure |

No doubt. I just got this picture of someone trying to rob a 7-11 with a blunderbuss. |

HMS Exeter for the win. I guess I've been to Canada enough times that that just landed. |

Safe from what? They are demilled, so I don't think they pose a danger. I offered to get a small Canadian museum a flintlock musket for one of their displays, and the curator thanked me and said that they are more hassle than they are worth. |

When I was a kid, there was a Japanese Nambu machine gun I played with at a museum on a Marine base on Okinawa. Pretty sure it was workable (no ammo though, probably didn't have a firing pin installed either) and it was in pristine condition. It was also chained down… ;-) |

The last public execution carried out in Ottawa, ON resulted from a murder carried out by a man who'd stolen the murder weapon from the Canadian War Museum in 1945. The full story is here, written by Dr. Andrew Burtch, one of the museum's current curators. PDF link |

My impression of the weapons in local museums is that they are all functional. |

Seems a shame to damage an antique work of craftsmanship out of the fear some punk is going to try to hold up a convenience store with a stolen museum musket. Later weapons I can understand. I did understand that the warning is not about the gun itself, but the reaction to the gun— that someone might be provoked to lethal force against the wielder of a non-functioning weapon because the fact that it won't function isn't known or obvious. The other concern is that someone might try to load and fire one of these weapons and wind up with it blowing up in their face. But part of me thinks that in both instances the consequences of crime are brought upon the criminal by his own folly. But I wonder how often anything like this would actually happen— I suspect more likely someone would steal the guns to sell them to unwary collectors, who only intend to display them anyway. |

Just curious what are the weapons missing? Kind of a stolen report without saying what was stolen. How will anyone know if say being proposition to buy some antique weapkn? |

By the way, I'll conclude by saying no weapon, in or outside of a museum, is ever "safe." A weapon remains a weapon, even if less effective than when first created. But then you can kill somebody with a suitably heavy Ming vase. So it's all a bit relative. |
