In the spirit of Lanesboro citizen Orval Amdahl, who repatriated a samurai sword to Tadahiro Motomura, the sword owner's descendant, the Lanesboro Historical Museum has begun the repatriation process by sending flags to the Obon Society, which will work to get the flags back to the Japanese soldiers' families. The photo shows Jane Peck's friend, Anna Ueda translating and explaining the meanings of the inscriptions. On Facebook: link |

Am I the only person to find this odd, if not actually distasteful? I wonder how many Germans would appreciate their flags, back – or captured/surrendered weaponry for that matter. No country was perfect throughout the Second World War, but some behaved with a level of barbarity which must not be forgotten. |
