We played a WW II game recently using Great Escape Games Iron Cross rules. We pitting British against Germans in Normandy! We choose the 'escalating battle' scenario from the rulebook. It was a hard fought affair. Both sides started with strong infantry units supported by armour. Initially the British looked to be in the box seat and in a position to decisively defeat the Germans but the Jerries fought back! On one of the flanks they took out a Sherman and the Tommies accompanying it halting the British advance there. The battle was then decided in the centre where the fighting focused on a town and its important bridge. The Germans tried their best to take the town but were defeated and the British occupied it. At this point with their armour support knocked out the Germans decided to retreat and save their infantry, a British victory! A German PAK 38 crew were deployed and awaiting any British attempt to take the bridge! In the distance they spy a Sherman!

I liked this! I was hoping you'd post this after reading a previous post on your blog. Any chance you can post the Iron Cross mods? I have read others mentioning the rules could use a few additions. I want to start running it with our group! How did you like IC compared to 1914? I am torn as to which set as will try first. I have Seven days to the River Rhine too. This set looks really good. I just need to finish up a few things to try them. Thank you John

Great AAR. I have been wanting to try IC for years but always seem to end playing something else. |

Thanks to you all for your comments! John check your email for a surprise. Re the 1914 question I think they play just as well as IC. they are a more complete set of rules and are basically the same as IC with period updates the most important of which is pre-allocation of command tokens representing the poorer communications of the time. I hope one day Great Escape Games will revisit IC and release a new version, they are a good solid set of 'BASIC' rules that were allowed to whither on the vine due to lack of support. |
