Actor William Smith, served in the USAF on a number of secret ops, etc. He was the USSR COL in "Red Dawn" … He had a heck of a resume'!

Wow, he sure did!

"Falconetti" from 'Rich Man, Poor Man'? Very sad, and thanks for sharing. Had no idea of his many skills or military background and accomplishments. What a resume indeed.

A full life indeed!

Interesting, I liked his performance in Conan. A small role but well played.

I recall a discussion among several of us linguist
types about him in 1963. IIRC, one of our senior
NCO's had attended the same Russian Language classes
held at Syracuse U. which were initiated in either
1950 or 1951.

The USAFSS community had a number of folks from the
entertainment community. Johnny Cash was an MIO
on Crete, IIRC.

Johnny Cash was a radio intercept airman who deciphered Russian morse code. He was stationed in Germany, where he taught himself to play the guitar and chain smoke cigarettes.

I never connected Smith as Conan's father. Nice bit of trivia.

Interesting, 79th. A captain with whom I served
remembered Cash as a TDY 'loaner' to the Cyprus
station. The captain was a butterbar at the time
so could have been mistaken.

Didn't know about Cash's service. Very interesting …

I would say either mistaken or a false memory. To my knowledge, Cash never mentioned serving or being stationed anywhere but Germany after his initial training.

Kris Kristofferson became a friend of Johnny Cash. Kris completed Airborne School and earned a Ranger Tab before becoming an Army helicopter pilot.
