On p. 13 of René Chartrand's Spanish Army of the Napoleonic Wars (2) 1808-1812 (Osprey Men-At-Arms), it mentions that squadrons of regular cavalry that had no horses would fight on foot. Does anyone know anything about this? I am considering some dismounted Spanish dragoons in yellow jackets and muskets.

Sure. Dismounted Spanish dragoons would be a nice addition to any Peninsular army, as would dismounted French dragoons. A lot of British cavalry in one of their South American expeditions fought dismounted due to the lack of horses. The Russians employed dismounted dragoons as well against the Persians or Ottomans (I don't recall which).

Well, when you put it like that, it doesn't make me feel like I've stumbled onto anything novel :)

Do you know if the dismounted Spanish Horse/Dragoons fought as a stand alone unit, were brigaded with other dragoons or with other dismounted units? Did Hussars and cazadores also fight dismounted?

Don't know about in field battles, but in the First Siege of Zaragoza there was a squadron or two of Spanish Dragoons that served as the core of the defense by the militia.

I agree with Levi – I think such units generally served in garrisons rather than in the field.
