The outline of the series of polls is proposed in this post:

What up is your favourite land battle of the War of the Fifth Coalition (1809)?

Starting nominations:
(Aspern and Essling are listed as separate entries because they tend to be played as separate miniatures games.)
* Battle of Raszyn, 19 April 1809
* Battle of Eckmühl, 21–22 April 1809
* Battle of Ratisbon (aka Battle of Regensburg), 23 April 1809
* Battle of Aspern, 21 May 1809
* Battle of Essling, 22 May 1809
* Battle of Wagram, 5–6 July 1809

If there is another Napoleonic land battle that is your favourite from this period, please nominate it.

Teugen-Hausen

Aspern and Essling were the same action-a two day fight.

The French refer to it as Essling, the Austrians as Aspern.

The two-day action where the French fought outnumbered and performed magnificently.

If two separate, Aspern

How can Aspern-Essling be separated into two battles? It was a two-day fight over the same ground by the same two opposing commanders…

I've only seen it played as a miniatures game as one or the other (and this is The Miniatures Page). Although I'm sure there are folks who have more time to play both days in one go, .

If we are splitting Aspern-Esslong, could the same rational apply to Leipzig?

It could… but hey sorting all these out ain't easy.

For my tastes, and time practicality, gaming just the first day of Leipzig is the best way to go about a miniatures game (even that is a massive weekend-long undertaking). If the French don't win their objectives on the first day, it's a long denouement playing out the rest for a foregone conclusion.

But I've never seen anyone game just one of the later days of Leipzig as a stand-alone game; it's either first day or all.

Have any of the folks here played the two days of Aspern-Essling as a miniatures game over a long session or weekend? If so, that could be reason to amend the poll. (And I'ld love to see the AAR!)

The two-day action where the French fought outnumbered and performed magnificently.

And yet they still lost. Everyone forgets that this engagement was the only one Napoleon lost prior to 1811. Thats why I like it!!!

Napoleon's first defeat was actually in 1796 at Caldiero against the Austrians. But as with the later Wagram campaign he learnt his lesson well and went on to defeat the Austrians.

The Battle of Raab is also a great battle, which was won by Eugene. His opponents were also the Austrians and like Napoleon, he learnt his lesson well after being defeated by the Austrians previously at Sacile.

And yet they still lost.

'The Danube, and not the Austrians, defeated us.'

And despite having overwhelming artillery superiority the Austrians failed to decisively defeat the French. The Austrian infantry had been beaten and no advantage was taken from the excellent performance of the Austrian artillery under Josef Smola.

The French withdrew to Lobau unmolested. If the roles were reversed, the French would have driven the Austrians into the river.
