The Ak74 seemed to be first reported in use in Afghanistan, but not as general issue at first. So in europe in the GSFG and the other Warsaw Pact countires,,,at what year were the 5.45mm rifles replacing the 7.62mm rifles in wide sprea service? |

While its first combat use was in Afghanistan in 1979, the Ak74 started replacing Ak47s in 1974. By 1985 the Ak74 had replaced all previous versions. link |

Certainly used in GSFG c1981. Examples of its ammunition acquired by Brixmis inside Neustrelitz exercise area that year. |
