In 15mm Essex has Granadine crossbowmen and many other troop types. |

Gripping Beast's 28mm Andalusians look like they would be okay even for late 15th century. |

Is there a book that depicts some Grenadine crossbowmen – or one of Drushinas wonderful pages? I am not sure how "arab" these would look after being 300 years on their own with Christian neighbours. Generally the uniforms of the late 15th century only slightly resemble those of the early, and not at all those of earlier times, though my expertise for Iberia is not very deep. |

Druzhina has the Toledo wooden carvings of the conquest of Granada at link – some Muslim soldiers visible there, and also a link to David Nicolle's version of a Granadine crossbowman. |

"I am not sure how "arab" these would look after being 300 years on their own with Christian neighbours." There was still lots of interaction with North Africa. There were, though, aspects of costume in Iberia which would set them apart from Arabs to the east. The Druzhina page has the plates from the Islamic West Osprey and you can see change over time, but not to the same degree as you would get between 10th Century and late 15th century Western Christendom. I wouldn't be sure of the Gripping Beast figure with the mail over his face – that does look like something from a few centuries earlier. The others look pretty okay for those shown in the Toledo carvings – if anything, they aren't 'Arabic' enough, though it is hard to know if the carver was exaggerating the difference. The short sleeved jacket over a longer sleeved shirt is worn by one of the GB figures and is on one of the Nicolle/McBride late Granadine figures. It'd be nice to see the hats though – rather like those worn in E. Europe. I wonder if there are any suitable Balkan/Hungarian figures? (EDIT: I did find some Old Glory 25mm North African marines with crossbows in their Ottoman range. I have no idea if the size would match with GB or whatever you are using. A few mixed in with others would probably be okay – it'd give a smattering of helmets). The European figures tend to have shorter tunics and tighter hose. |

I made some transformations of Warhammer Bretonnian figures to get some Granadine crossbowmen for the last years of the XV century. link The look of the Granadines in the last years of the kingdom was very particular, adopting some issues of the Christian attire. You can see very good images of Granadine soldiers in the carved wooden panels of the choir of the Toledo Cathedral. There you can see that, for example, not all were turbans, but many Moors wore pointed hats with brims, of oriental inspiration |

Thank you all for your replies. I think I'm going to go for MajorB's suggestion and buy a box of Perry's mercenaries,a bit of greenstuff and some headswaps will give me twelve crossbowmen and plenty of other figures to play with. Thanks again! Frank |
