On the one hand, ten pounds for rules and minis is a great deal, and the world wide shipping rates are great. On the other hand, I don't need the minis and am happy to buy a PDF. I hate to wait for some paper to travel half way around the world to get a game.

But does anyone handle these games in the US? Anyone have a second hand copy to sell?

Maybe I should just spend $30 USD and get myself a couple of these. Any recommendations? I'm thinking Thud Ridge and maybe Falklands.

Use to be able to get from Brookhurst.

Andrew Walters23 Jun 2021 10:54 a.m. PST

Brookhurst doesn't seem to have them now.

Also, any recommendations for specific Wings At War games from people who have read/played several? I want Thud Ridge and the WW1 game. I wouldn't mind getting three or four but which to get after those two is a tough choice. Falklands! Korea! B-17s! Battle of Britain!

Pulled the trigger, WW1, Scramble for Britain, Thud Ridge, Flames over the Falklands for just under $70 USD shipping included. I will probably 3D print more aircraft for more choices.

As a community I think we should have more rules reviews available. I'm buying a lot of rules without knowing much about them.

Andrew you chose well. I only have Thud Ridge, the Falklands and A mighty fortress. All are great but I'd particularly commend thud ridge as both sides can assemble asymmetric forces with SAR also forming part of the rules and points. I really like the mighty fortress as it's more about hitting v1 and2 sites whilst being intercepted by 262s. I also play check your six but with the wings at war set you can generate and manage larger air battles with likely missions rather than play a fixed scenario. I hope tumbling dice do more like a Arab Israeli war or a Cold War what if.

Andrew,

I have Duel of Aces (WW1), MiG Alley (Korea), Wings Over Suez (1956 War) and Thud Ridge (Vietnam).

The WW1 and post-WW2 variants play differently, which gives a nice feel. I've used Thud Ridge as a proxy for the Arab-Israeli Wars 1967-1973 without any difficulty as most of the types are already there – I had to extrapolate stats for the Mirage III but that was easy enough to do.

I've also used Thud Ridge for my Agacher Strip War 1985 campaign and plan to use it in the future for the Ogaden War.

I'm not sure what sets we might see in the future; I know Boggler has a set with Tumbling Dice at the moment covering the 1969 Football War but it's not yet been released.

There are loads of periods I'd love to see covered – WW2 carrier battles, an Arab-Israeli Wars specific set, 1980s USN v Libyan/Iranian land-based aircraft.

I only tend to use Wings at War as I really like the system, especially the energy modelling – you might find some useful nuggets on my blog:

Best wishes,

Thanks, I'll look at those blogs soon.

I would like to see something more recent than 1982. The Iraq and Iran wars didn't really produce much grist for this mill, so it might have to be speculative situations.

I was also pondering if this system could do a dragon combat game pretty nicely. I've wanted to do something like that in the kid's room at a game convention.

I'm going to 3D print some planes to augment what's included, then hopefully try these out in July. There's a dearth of reviews for what appears to be a popular system, so I'll try to fit that in. Looking forward to it…

That…

Is…

Genius. I love that!

I own Thud Ridge, MiG Alley, Flames Above Falklands, WW1 rules and the free download Desert Spitfires for ‘48 Air War. I've played the Falklands variant the most. The core game engine is the same for all of them (balancing energy and movement, etc) but each has a little bit of specific "chrome" and thus plays a little different. The plane ratings are relative to the other craft for that particular game. They can be customized for other conflicts as you can see from some of the creative projects made by fellow TMPers.

I see that you got a few and that's what I would recommend (get those for periods that interest you). It's really a great, simple set of rules that give period feel and are challenging to play (but not learn).

AirWar:C21 works for other theaters, and the ultra-modern period.

Tumbling Dice has awesome customer service and are very responsive. One of my favorite firms to deal with.
