What do you know is 100% factually wrong historically but you do it anyway? The top five I do, the bottom ones I don't but know people who do.

a. Coureurs des bois command my Indian units in FIW skirmishing.
b. Bedouins fight right alongside Tauregs in my FFL games.
c. The musket wings of my ECW units are half the depth of my center pikes.
d. Some of my ACW Confederate units carry state flags (And I don't just mean Texas, who did.}
e. The Age of Sail and the Golden Age of Piracy have no meaningful distinction on my table.

f. I paint Napoleonic French in light blue so they can be seen on the table top.
g. I field Tiger tanks in numbers far out of proportion
h. The Old Guard are present and see action in all of my Napoleonic battles.
i. Native American figures sub for Zulus in a pinch, and vice versa.
j. I use Waterloo British in the Peninsula
k. ?

Confess! Confess!

NOLA Chris20 Jun 2021 1:21 p.m. PST

non-historical army match-ups…

Dagwood20 Jun 2021 1:34 p.m. PST

My Carthaginian Libyan spearmen look nothing like Carthaginian-era spearmen but more like Egyptian-era Libyans carrying large round shields and long spears. (Unfortunate timing from Phil Barker !).

But I use them anyway, and will continue to do so until I convert and paint my first edition Lamming Greeks to more suitable figures, and convert and paint up the Roman armoured figures to go with them.

MajorB20 Jun 2021 1:39 p.m. PST

Interesting. I don't think I do any of those.

John the OFM20 Jun 2021 3:21 p.m. PST

Yeah, I have the Phil Barker inspired Carthaginian Zulu Hoplitrs too. Minifigs and Ral Partha. I could have gotten the Ra Partha "Heavy" Carthaginians, but they weren't sanctioned by Phil.

I use FIW British and WAS British (the ‘45) indiscriminately.
I have generic Loyalists.

My Renaissance Tartars included Skythians, Huns…

D6 Junkie20 Jun 2021 3:29 p.m. PST

I need a few figures to fill out my Arab Crusades army and used some of my Sikh War cav from the 1800s.

Col Durnford20 Jun 2021 3:39 p.m. PST

My Zulu War 24th foot (RalPartha) are all wearing pure white helmets, clean uniforms, and have a band box look about them.

My local force VC has more than a few rice paddy hats scattered among the platoon. Not historical, but nothing says VC like those conical hats.

Personal logo Flashman14 Supporting Member of TMP20 Jun 2021 4:26 p.m. PST

Ah, yeah I also use Crusader-era Arabs to fight the Legion too.

I use French Old Guard Grenadiers where I really should be using converged line grens, and the same highlanders have to serve in all the Jacobite risings.

Life is too short--not to mention budgets (and space) too limited--to build armies exactly right for every historical battle. If I'd understood in 1975 what I understand now, I'd have built far fewer troops, but my armies would be more complete.

Not my genre. ;-) Cheers!

Back in the 70's I used Hong Kong knock-offs of the Aifix Guards Band as Indians in Little Bighorn battles (yes, they always won… ;-)

my 6mm French and Austrians are painted for 1809, but I use them for any other years I feel like, including 1796.

My French are not dark blue, they are lighter. All my armies are slightly lighter in color to stand out. I paint them all to look slightly dirty. No parade ground troops, no perfect uniforms. It's war, not a parade. My excuse for missing details.

I stopped using limbers in games for all artillery long ago. Use a marker for limber status. A lot of my flags are not right for their units or the period. . Just a short cut I decided to take.

Some of my AWI Continental regiments carry the Betsy Ross flag which didn't exist.

Some of my 15mm Confederate regiments carry both he 1st national flag and the battle flag (old Heritage figures that came that way.)

My AWI British Guards carry their flags, which they didn't.

I recently bought a 15mm Confederate regiment collection already painted. They carry nice state flags, which I am going to leave that way.

Johann von Gluhwein21 Jun 2021 3:37 a.m. PST

Every unit is in parade uniforms. Imperial Germans with horsehair plumes instead of no plumes and helmet covers. British home service uniforms show up overseas all the time. That sort of a thing.

Krupp guns for everyone. They just look cool and are widely available in most scales so they tend to be what I use for any given breech loading artillery.

Fat Wally21 Jun 2021 4:32 a.m. PST

d. I'm a sucker for a Confederate state flag.

cantbeatdavy21 Jun 2021 7:12 a.m. PST

My Scanian wars Swedes look VERY similiar to Swedes from Great Northern War…..
My 1690 French Army looks VERY similar to a early 18th century French army…..
All my Landsknechts fight on all sides in all countries…. tbf that's not so bad

Ditto Betsy Ross flag(s).
Ditto flags for my Guards.

I shall also very soon be gifting a Minuteman company the Bedford flag.

rmaker21 Jun 2021 9:37 a.m. PST

In my Napoleonic armies, howitzers are separated into their own batteries.

I haven't done it yet, but I am planning to have 101st Airborne drop into Antartica in early 1945 to destroy nearly-complete the Haunebu 4.

You want the truth?
You can't handle the truth!

oldjarhead21 Jun 2021 5:28 p.m. PST

All my Scottish (colonial) units have a piper and a drummer, some officers wear home service dress. Cavlry escorts wear full dress. It's my army.

I got 20 ACW famous commander figures (10 from each side) for a project. I was only able to find descriptions and pictures of their horses for 17 of them. I winged the paint jobs on the rest.

Most of my extraterrestrial life forms are massively hominid-like.

Grelber22 Jun 2021 9:50 a.m. PST

My 1897 Greek cavalry take the field in their dress uniforms, not in the simpler tunics shown in period photos.

I have cake decoration palm trees. They serve as whatever species of palm tree might be in the area where the battle is: the Caribbean, North Africa, the South Pacific, the steaming jungles of South America and central Africa, Florida, pretty much anywhere there are (or were) palm trees.

Grelber, where did you info on find Greek cavalry uniforms? I have tried to find pictures, but couldn't.

k. Napoleonic flags on the eagle poles, and cavalry carry their flags too.

l. Republican Roman armour is good Roman armour for any Republican army.

m. New French Corps de Cavalerie send units into the battle in my FIW games.

n. Provincial units carry flags into battle in my FIW games.

Personal logo miniMo Supporting Member of TMP23 Jun 2021 8:54 p.m. PST

For polling purposes, perhaps the "my units carry flags when they oughtn't too" should replace all the individual flag penalties so as not to dilute the flag vote.

Chimpy26 Jun 2021 2:19 p.m. PST

My 1815 Netherland troops carry flags that weren't issued until after the battle of Waterloo.

My 1807-12 French fight my 1815 Allied army.

My French Horse artillerymen are wearing full dress uniforms cos that's what the figures/miniatures were.

When I was playing WH40K, I completely ignored the fluff about Emperors, psychics, heresy blah blah and just used them as a set of SF rules.

Elenderil02 Jul 2021 1:38 p.m. PST

My 6mm figures don't have eyes. Does that count?

Johann von Gluhwein09 Jul 2021 1:32 p.m. PST

My 54mm toy soldiers don't have eyes.

I don't track wounds for natives in my TSATF games. All hits are out of action.

For Europeans, wounded are left where they fall.

This happens because my games grew beyond what the rules are intended for.

Personal logo Old Contemptible Supporting Member of TMP06 Oct 2022 1:33 a.m. PST

Years ago Dick Bryant wrote in "The Courier" that he didn't do wounded in TSATF for either side. I thought that was a great idea. So I tried it and the players lost their minds over it. So I went back to having wounded again. Totally unexpected reaction.

Why are we posting to an old thread that just had the poll completed?
