The recent discussion on a new Master and Commander had me thinking what are my favorite war movies of all eras. Looked up a few best war movie lists and ranked them on my favorite watching. So here is what I have. 1 Last of the Mohicans 2 Master and Commander 3 The Great Escape 4 A Bridge to Far 5 Black Hawk Down 6 Das Boot 7 Battleground 8 Paths of Glory 9 Longest Day 10 Stalag 17 11 Full Metal Jacket which alway thought would have been in my top 10 didn't make it. |

I'd agree that "Last of the Mohicans" is an excellent film, but I wouldn't consider it a war movie per se. Certainly war is a big part of it but not the central theme or plot. Kind of like "Cold Mountain" or "The Duellist". I like "a Brifge Too Fat" as a good example of a war movie. Also like "Patton". |

Gotta add 1917 to the list. That easily makes my top 5. The premise may be a bit tough to grapple with, but the material culture and mannerisms were top notch. |

The key to any list is, if it is not your list it is wrong. The Longest Day gets my vote – loved watching it with my dad who landed at Normandy on D+6 as part of the 30th Infantry Division. |

I'll add Bataan, They Were Expendable, Air Force, Attack and In Which We Serve to the list. FABET01, A Walk in the Sun is a favorite of mine. I think it is a good movie just a little different than most war films. |

Battle of Britain is another that might bump Full Metal Jacket on my list, maybe higher, how many war movies has Suzanna York in her white cottons? On another web site the movie guy was saying even bad books should be read, I added just like bad movies. Someone said like what bad movie is worth watching and I replied Battle of the Bulge and I rest my case. He said he actually bought the movie but after seeing reviews in 10 years never watched it. I told him he needs to. |

Even with all its flaws in plot and everything I reported about it in moviemistakesdotcom, I would add "Fury" to the list. Still waiting for the movie or miniseries about the 761st Negro Tank Battalion… |
