This will surely be removed from this site as Tango was hit by the bug. These are meant to be Byzantines, but I think they are several centuries after but well, well, worth showing.

Great miniatures and that blog has some fantastic artwork on it. I've been trying not to add new blogs but this one just made the list.

and let us also thank the Editor for sorting it all out.

I suspect the Byzantines are now correctly shown.

We all (me included) give him so much grief. Time to express some appreciation. Heck, what would we do without this board?

Damn nice US Army Grunts !!!! 👍👍👌

The Navy types will be so hacked off.

Marines are like that. These ain't US Army I am told.

Somehow you can tell they are USMC (I would not have a clue, they could almost be VC to me….but let us not go there. I need to stay out of the Dawghouse) but the flak jacket is apparently a suggestion. Even the mortar crew stripped to the waist, someone will say that you can tell they are Marines.

For me the only clue is the long sleeved USN waterproof jacket worn in the late stages of Tet (by some of these).

No one in VN wore long sleeves, except when they did.

And, for me, that is Tet, Hue, the Citadel and late on…and USMC.

But I agree about the quality of the painting and modelling of the background. Outstanding work.

The Army wore Flak Vests but they were not the same as the USMC type. Sleeves down or up … You can't tell me at no time did only the USMC wear sleeves down …

But yes the link says they are USMC. I didn't check that before I posted. My Badd …

Skarper12 Jun 2021 5:55 p.m. PST

Those figures are meant to be USMC. The flak vests were chunkier and more commonly used by Marines in combat.

Airmobile often left them behind to save weight – but not always.

Such is my understanding and confirmed by photos to some extent.

I think these figures could double as Army, since most gear was the same.

I think the USMC had 'butt packs' early in the war, when they would be using M14s anyway. Once it got to Tet, differences in gear were minimal. That is my understanding. Keen to hear if anyone has anything definitive.

Legion 4, agree entirely hence my "Except when they did" comment. But I was always surprised to see, late in Tet Citadel, every USM wearing long sleeves. Indeed I actually asked about it and there was some suggestion it was for protection FIBU areas. Later I learnt that is turned very cold and wet and these were Navy waterproof parka-type jackets.

As Skarper also says, it would take clever eye to tell a Marine from US Army infantry. Heck, I cannot even tell VC from "innocent" civilians…….

Yes, they was a different design and heavier. I posted about this a while back about the difference.

Very much so … McNamara was all about standardizing much of the US Armed Forces equipment. Which in most cases made sense to me. Otherwise. it has been said, by many, "He knew the cost of everything but the value of nothing." …

I think the USMC had 'butt packs' early in the war,
The US Army had butt packs then … I was also issued one as a cadet, '75-'79 and IIRC even when I was in the 101, '80-'83. I still have at least one around here. I use it to carry my Garmin and all it's attachments.

Yes I believe we discussed this before. Both reasons makes sense to me.

We used to roll our sleeves down when we went into the Panama jungles, again, when I was with the 101. We even worn gloves at times. A lot of sharp stuff, e.g. "Black Palm", some foliage, etc. Not to mention bugs, critters, snakes and monkeys🐒 throwing the Bleeped text💩 at you.

Even in MOUT in locations like Hue, Saigon, etc. A lot of sharp stuff everywhere I'm sure. E.g. glass, shattered bricks, twisted metal, etc.

But of course … cold rain is generally uncomfortable too … based on my past experiences. It sucks …

Heck, I cannot even tell VC from "innocent" civilians…….
And that is always the rub in COIN …

Isn't there a saying…

"You can always tell a Marine, you just can't tell a Marine anything."

Maybe that's New Yorkers…but it seems to fit.

USMC training breaks recruits down and builds them back up – stubborn.

There are a lot of saying like that … 😁
