"Even if a U.S. military base does eventually open in Central Asia, it won't change the balance of power on the ground. U.S. President Joe Biden has promised there will be no U.S. troops left in Afghanistan by the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks this year. But Washington is determined to keep supporting the Afghan government in its fight against the Taliban, and this is unlikely to be achievable without the establishment of U.S. military bases in Afghanistan's neighboring countries…"

At least the article realistically states that none of the countries involved will want such a base cause it would irritate Russia and China. I really do think the Americans are looking to use withdrawal from Afghanistan as an excuse to undermine Russian and Chinese border security.
Tajikistan could be used as a base to support armed insurgents in western China and spy on key Chinese military facilities in the Gobi desert whilst Turkmenistan could be used as part of encirclement of Russia the USA has been trying to accomplish since 1949. Indeed all of a sudden the Caspian Sea is no longer a safe space for Russia. Also Turkmenistan opens up the US to tightening pressure on Iran. I think the opportunity for blow back here is huge – it would probably bring China, Russia and Iran closer together and it would increase their meddling here but also elsewhere.
It would place US troops needlessly at risk – nearly all these countries have issues with Islamists as well as pro-Russian groups and Russian minorities. US needs to set clear lines in the sand and these isolated unstable authoritarian third rate ex-Soviet countries shouldn't be part of that line. |

The US may not have an official base in Central Asia, but I suspect we have several airfields in the region that serve as logistic centers and in which our forces routinely operate out of. I'm with John the OFM on this one; we need to pull our troops from the entire region ASAP. (Rome is crumbling at home, need the legions to abandon Hadrian's Wall and return home.) |

Pretty easy to do. Just have the Japanese build us some floating airbases, and/or naval and airbases, which can be moved around at will, by tugboats as needed/desired. If the Chinese can build islands in the South China Sea without any legal basis, we can too. Park another one near Taiwan or the Senkakus, and other areas too. From what I've read, they're virtually unsinkable. |

They need to pull out of the region. Stop with the polka-dot map of military bases. |

Tajikistan is basically in Chinese pocket already. They own ca 40% of their state debt, have a significant % of their industry under direct control. Chinese are also pulling them away from Russia-led integration processes. Turkmenistan also depends on China, but not to this extent.Still, lots of their gas is going to China under a long-term contract on very unfavorable conditions. The country ruling elite are at more or less good terms with Taliban, and their country is one of the gates for drugs from Afghanistan to Russia and Europe. If they are smart they'll try to milk USA to their advantage, but of course both Russia and China are not going to be happy and they have lots of ways to make their say in the matter. |

Unfortunately, weak leadership will make weak decisions. |

No … I see not real advantage to this … at least for now. As we see if we upset Russia or China they just do a hack attack on US businesses, etc. Or in one case maybe release a virus causing a pandemic … If you think otherwise … I've got a bridge in NYC to sell ya … |
