Does anyone know what the flags and banners of the Volga Bulgars may have looked like in the 12th to 13th centuries or thereabouts? thanks |

I have no idea. I would just go with some standards based on other steppe tribes. Horsetail standards, banners with various animal totems might be possible as well. Wolves, Bears, Eagles, etc. |

Isn't there an Osprey Men at Arms on the Bulgars? Maybe they have some info in there. |

I have the Osprey book, banners are referred too but not described. |

There are some paintings by Tatar artists on the Internet, where the banners of the Volga Bulgars are depicted. But how these images are authentic and on what basis – is difficult to judge.
Adoption of Islam by the Bulgars. On the banners of the Bulgars, pre-Islamic (apparently generic) totems are depicted. |

Who! Thanks for that Cuprum 2! I was beginning to lean towards something more Islamic than pagan. |

I don't think these are pagan symbols. It is rather a generic emblem of nobility. And they may well be used in the Islamic period. |
