Hello everyone,

It has been a while since I posted, but I wanted to display some information I have been translating recently. One of my biggest issues is my lack of fluency in the French language when it comes to documents with multiple paragraphs. At the moment, I have many documents that I need to translate to get a clearer picture of the actions of the men in early April from the 3rd Corps. With the help of my anonymous donor, which none of this would be possible without, I have started to translate the first of three pages describing the actions of the 2nd Division 3rds Corps Artillery during the days of the 19th, 21st, and 22nd April 1809. I will provide both the original document and my translation. Please, feel free to comment on the accuracy of the translation to help me learn and progress with my research! I will be adding pages two and three in the future.

Thank you,

Michael Lint

Go Mike, looks good.
I too struggle with a lot of the material I brought back, as I've mentioned.
Looking forward to reading more,
regards davew

Dave,

Thanks for the kind comment! This document has pretty clear handwriting, which makes it easier to translate. However, as you are probably aware, a lot of documents have very hard to read scribble. It is a slow process, but fun and very important to shed more light on the actions of the individual officers and soldiers of the 3rd Corps in April 1809. Should be with the other two documents soon.

Hello everyone,

Pages two and three with the original document and then my translations. Special thanks to my Immo F. from the Napoleonic Discussion Forum, who helped me with one of the translations and the signature of the artillery commanding officer of the 2nd Division.

Hello everyone,

I posted more information about the officers that were found on the translated documents above on my blog.

Here is a link to my most recent post.

I will be adding part 2 hopefully by the end of the week.

von W,

Thank you for the kind words. I just want to shed light on the deeds of regular soldiers and officers. They sometimes get lost in the shadows of the big generals. I am a slow translator and most likely not 100% perfect, but I have enjoyed the process and learn new things about the Battle of Thann, which was the goal in the end!

looking forward at your final work – hopefully a book, it will be not that easy to sum up all those wonderful and detailed information.

Indeed we do!

That seems to be the main issue where to start and how to put it all together. Do I concentrate just on the Battle of Thann, St. Hiliare's Division, or the 3rd Corps in April. At the present I will continue to share my research as people have kindly shared their archival material with me.

An excellent reference for the material is in Saski's 3-volume history of the campaign.

Primary/archival material is in the book and is highly recommended.

One of the aspects of the material is that Davout's command's (III Corps) artillery component was overwhelmingly Gribeauval material. The two new corps formed for the campaign (II and IV, Oudinot and Massena, respectively) were issued Systeme AN XI guns and howitzers.

Hello everyone,

I finished my last post of the citations for the 2nd Division Artillery. A little bit of a long post, but it hopefully sheds some light on the actions of artillery in the battle of mid-April 1809. link

Brechtel198,

It is one of my favorite reference materials for this campaign. I used it heavily during my last post.

Thank you
Michae
