Good thing it grows on trees.

The material does not protect quite as well as a Kevlar sheet of the same thickness—but it only costs about 5 percent as much.

This might cause a resurgence of using shields in modern combat, if it can stop small arms fire.

Shields are cumbersome, fatiguing, and not particularly practical for combat. Maybe some MOUT applications.

No mention whether this will stop rifle rounds, or just pistol rounds. I see this as a cheap way to harden a building.

I think the market for a shield is going to be law enforcement.

Martial arts practice weapons like the bo-ken are usually made of hardwood like oak or hickory, and can be effective blunt weapons. Wood treated as described in the article would probably be lighter and harder, lifting practice weapons to another level of effectiveness.

For the modern ninja, superwood chopsticks could be a better disguised weapon than ordinary bamboo or plastic chopsticks.

Now we're ready for some cyberpunk action.
